WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – For the second consecutive game, sophomore
Noel Weathers notched a career-high with 25 points, however the Notre Dame College women's basketball team (1-4, 0-2 MEC) fell to West Liberty University (3-2, 1-0 MEC), 84-75 on the road on Tuesday evening.
The two sides exchanged baskets to begin the contest, as
Lilee Carlson drained a stop and pop three-pointer to make the score 10-9 West Liberty at the 5:48 mark in the first quarter. Next, WLU closed out the frame on a 16-4 run to lead 26-13 after one.
The second quarter was low scoring and back-and-forth as the NDC deficit remained between 11 and 16 points for the entire period. The Hilltoppers owned a 41-25 advantage into the break.
West Liberty opened their largest lead of the contest at 25 points (66-41), with 1:45 left to play in the third quarter. However, the Falcons worked the contest back to 68-50, following a 9-2 run to close out the frame which included a half-court buzzer beating three by
Kennadi Harris.
Notre Dame carried the momentum into the fourth quarter, pushing the Falcon run to 14-2 as NDC moved the score to 68-55 with 8:06 left to play. Notre Dame continued to chip away at the Hilltopper lead with 2:22 on the clock, as NDC pulled to within single digits following a transition three-pointer from
Rachel Richardson (80-71). Despite the Falcons outscoring the Hilltoppers 34-18 over the final 11 minutes to play, WLU claimed the victory 84-75.
As aforementioned, Weathers carried the NDC offense for the second game in a row, posting a game-high and career-high 25 points on 10-14 shooting from the floor and 5-6 shooting from the free throw line. Carlson chipped in 17 points, as Richardson totaled 11 and
Cencere McDaniel posted a season-high 10.
Richardson facilitated the Falcons offensively, with a team-high and season-high three assists, to go with three steals.
On the glass,
Hayley St. John corralled a team-high six rebounds, alongside Weathers with five.
As a team, Notre Dame shot 28-58 (48.3%) from the floor, 3-7 (42.9%) from three and 16-24 (66.7%) from the free throw line. In addition, NDC posted 10-16 (62.5%) shooting from the field during the fourth quarter, as the Falcons held the Hilltoppers to 5-18 (27.8%) shooting in the frame. Notre Dame added 37 rebounds, 11 assists, seven steals and four blocks.
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will be back in action on Sunday Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. at Ohio Dominican University.
