SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College men's soccer went up against Davis & Elkins College, two teams battling for second place in the conference standings. Just over a month ago, these two teams played to a scoreless draw. However, on Sunday, the Falcons scored twice in the first half and were able to get past D&E, 3-1.
The Falcons had taken three shots and had two corner kick opportunities within the first seven minutes. Throughout the first half, Notre Dame took 11 shots, while holding D&E to two.
Davis & Elkins' goalkeeper Grant Wyles did a nice job in the first 45 minutes, saving five NDC shots on target.
Notre Dame was able to break through in the 39
th minute. Following a long pass from the defensive side of the field, junior
Ailton Fagner Silva danced around a defender and saw an open line to the goal, sprinting past everyone to find the back of the net.
Three minutes later, sophomore
Parker Bolin had possession on the left side of the field as the Senators' defenders tried to catch up. Bolin crossed the ball over to senior
Evans Armah, on the right side of the box. As the pass came through, Wyles went after the ball, falling to the ground and leaving Armah wide open for the goal.
Davis & Elkins made it interesting with 15 minutes to go in the match. The Senators had two shots on goal, within a four minute span. And then, in the 82
nd minute, D&E's Shemar Daley converted on a goal to make the score 2-1.
NDC wanted to put some insurance on the board, and did that in the 87th minute. Sophomore
Jared Rimmer passed the ball over the midfield line to the middle of the field. From there, Armah immediately pushed it up to his left, finding Silva. Silva outran all defenders, again, to score for a second time. It is his first multi-goal game of the year.
"Today was a great win," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "We are very pleased with the performance. We knew this would be a tough opponent, so three points is a big result."
Notre Dame's goalkeeper
Danilo Abayo Wilson saved three D&E shots.
The Falcons will be on the road, next Wednesday, to battle Frostburg State. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
