CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Despite falling 2-1 to no. 14 Charleston (8-0-2, 7-0-1 MEC), the Notre Dame College women's soccer team (4-3-3, 3-3-1 MEC) fought valiantly on the road, including creating several scoring opportunities.
UC opened the scoring during the first minute of the game, as Laura Vierhout found Juliette Lucas with a through ball for the goal (1-0).
The Golden Eagles posted five more shots, including two on goal, before NDC created their first opportunity. Senior
Jordan Pasalaqua grabbed a pair of saves before the 10-minute mark to ensure the contest stay 1-0. Senior
Kalie Blaising posted the first shot for Notre Dame in the 11
th minute, after intercepting a pass in the attacking third, Blaising took a touch and laced a curling shot off the top woodwork but the score remained 1-0.
In the 33
rd minute, Charleston doubled their advantage to 2-0 as Lucas scored her second of the contest. The score remained 2-0 into the break.
The Falcons burst out of halftime with a flurry of dangerous shots by
Miriam Szijarto,
Anaya Edwards and Blaising in the 49
th and 54
th minute but the score stayed 2-0 UC.
Pasalaqua remained stout in goal, sending back a season-high eight shots in the second half alone to allow NDC a chance at a comeback.
In the 81
st minute,
Louisa Follert dribbled into the box before dishing off to
Savannah Singh who powered home her second goal of the year, cutting the Golden Eagle lead in half, 2-1.
Despite a valiant 90 minutes, the Falcons fell 2-1 at no. 14 Charleston.
Pasalaqua totaled a career-high 12 saves in the match, tied for the sixth-most saves in a match in NDC program history, including the most saves by an NDC Falcon since Kristy Kolschetzky recorded 13 on Oct. 28, 2012.
Blaising (3) and Edwards (2) tallied multiple shots each as Notre Dame totaled eight shots, including four shots on goal, to go with five corner kicks as a team.
The Notre Dame College women's soccer team will be back in action on Sunday Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. to face Davis & Elkins College.
