INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College volleyball team (6-11, 4-4 MEC) traveled to West Virginia State University (17-4, 8-1 MEC) on Friday evening, as the Falcons fell in straight sets.
NDC opened the contest ahead 12-7, following a 9-2 run which featured kills from
Kelsie Palmer,
Sydney Bray,
Diamond Baker and
Jayme Zoeckler. However, WV State utilized a 12-2 stretch during the latter half of the frame to leap in front 22-17. Notre Dame battled with WVSU for the rest of the set as both sides exchanged points, before the Yellow Jackets won 25-21.
Once again, the Falcons created an early lead, as Notre Dame raced ahead 13-7 with Zoeckler generating four aces in a five-point stretch. NDC pushed the lead to 21-14, before the Yellow Jackets mounted a comeback. WV State tallied 11 of the final 13 points in the frame to steal set two, 25-23.
The final set began back-and-forth with the contest tied at 7-7, before the Yellow Jackets claimed a 12-8 edge. Notre Dame continued to fight and produced a 7-2 run to take an 18-16 lead. However, West Virginia State closed out the match 25-22.
The Falcons were led offensively by Comer (9),
Lilliana Mook (8) and Bray (6), as Palmer and Baker added five kills each.
In addition, Zoeckler added a game-high 28 assists and game-high four service aces.
On defense, a trio of Falcons in Bray, Comer and libero
Kiley Kalina grabbed a team-high 10 digs apiece.
As a team, Notre Dame registered 35 kills on a .143 attack percentage, to go along with 32 assists, 41 digs, seven aces and four blocks.
The Notre Dame College volleyball team will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at the University of Charleston.
