INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The good times keep on rolling for the Notre Dame College women's soccer team (7-3-3, 6-3-1 MEC), as they defeat West Virginia State University (6-5-2, 5-3-2 MEC) on the road 2-0, to claim their third win a row and seventh win in their last nine games.
The Falcons got to work early in the sixth minute, as senior
Madison Marino blistered a shot off the crossbar with junior
Miriam Szijarto there for the rebound and put-back goal (1-0).
Notre Dame continued the offensive pressure with several shots by
Hailee Smith,
Louisa Follert and
Ashley Rainho over the course of the of the half, until Szijarto struck again in the 41
st minute. The Ravenna, Ohio native dribbled the ball up the field before ripping a shot from the left side over the outstretched arm of WVSU keeper, to double the NDC lead to 2-0.
In the second half, senior
Jordan Pasalaqua tallied three of her four saves, en route to back-to-back shutouts, totaling 26 in her career, as the NDC defense has not allowed a goal over the last 211 minutes of game time. Despite playing down a player after Smith's 86
th minute red card, the Madison, Ohio native grabbed the 34
th win of her career, tied for the most career wins in NDC program history with Kristy Kolschetzky. Moreover, the Madison High School product is second in program history in shutouts (3 away) and second in saves (21 away).
Szijarto continues to power the NDC offense, posting the fourth multi-goal game of her campaign. The Archbishop Hoban High School product has scored a team-high 12 goals on the year, tied for the fifth-most in NDC single season history, including the most goals scored since Leslea Chopka (15) and Kati McBrearty (12) in 2002. Lastly, the junior is the top goal scorer in the Mountain East Conference and a top five finisher at the net in the entire country.
Notre Dame outshot WV State 17 (10) to 11 (4), with Szijarto (4), Follert (3) and Smith (3) leading the way. NDC added four corner kicks to WVSU's one.
The Notre Dame College women's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. when Frostburg State University comes to Mueller Field.
