SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Freshman
Sydney Bray continues to etch herself into the NDC program record book by posting 25 kills during Notre Dame's (5-10, 3-3 MEC) four-set victory over Glenville State (8-12, 2-5 MEC), tied for the fifth-most kills in a match in program history.
"I think it was the team as a whole, we had a good connection and I had a great connection with Jayme [Zoeckler]," mentioned Bray when asked about the stellar performance. "Our passers were putting it up for her and giving me the best ball to get the kill and that career-high."
Bray and the Falcons started the match off red-hot, leading 4-0 before posting a 13-8 advantage as the freshman from Woodstock, Ga. had six kills, already. Next, GSU worked the set back to 14-14, following a 6-1 run. Despite Bray totaling nine first-set kills, the Pioneers stole the frame after claiming seven of the final nine points, 28-26.
The second set was back-and-forth at 12-12, before Notre Dame took over the remainder of the contest. The Falcons surged to secure 13 of the next 18 points to even the game at one set apiece (25-17). NDC polished off the frame with kills from Bray,
Samantha Comer,
Kelsie Palmer and
Jayme Zoeckler in rapid succession.
Notre Dame kept their foot on the gas in set three, flying to a 15-3 lead. NDC claimed the set 25-10 as Bray and fellow freshman
Diamond Baker punctuated the frame.
The Falcons continued to roll into four, leaping to a 5-0 lead, highlighted by a pair of Baker's career-high four service aces. Despite Glenville State continuing to fight by pulling the contest to 13-10 NDC, Notre Dame stepped up their intensity with another 5-0 spurt. With the Falcons ahead 23-15, Bray and Baker once again tag-teamed to close out the stanza 25-17, as the Falcons remained undefeated at home this season.
As aforementioned, Bray registered a game-high and career-high 25 kills (.463 att. percentage), tied for the fifth-most kills in NDC program history, including tied for the third-most kills in a four-set match in program history. Moreover, the Etowah High School product posted the most kills by an NDC Falcon since Mary Kate McHugh's 26-kill outing at WV State on Oct. 20, 2018.
Comer added 13 kills and game-high 16 digs, while Zoeckler recorded a game-high 44 assists and 14 digs as both Falcons generated double-double performances on the night.
Palmer tossed in nine kills on a season-best .350 attack percentage (min. 20 att.), as junior libero
Kiley Kalina nabbed 13 digs.
"I think that defensively we were moving around with the hitters on the other side, and that really set me up for success," stated Comer postgame. "Stepping into the holes and knowing where they are going to hit because we know all of their intentions and the probability of where the hit is going to go, so I really give that up to my coaches, they really set that up for us. But the block is really what did it for us because they had a lot of touches and that overall is what got me the 16 digs. Offensively, I think that it was the connections, and today just felt different with the trust in the team and it was a great experience."
In comparing the two sides, Notre Dame owned 57 kills on a .277 attack percentage, to go with 52 assists, 71 digs, 10 aces and four blocks. Glenville State maintained 35 kills on a .077 attack percentage, to go with 33 assists, 51 digs, six aces and seven blocks.
The Notre Dame College volleyball team will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. as Concord University enters the Murphy Gymnasium.
