Shiels secures 200th career win in shutout over Glenville State

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Head coach Mike Shiels picked up his 200th career win and 100th in the Mountain East Conference, following a 3-0 victory for NDC (6-3-3, 5-3-1 MEC) over Glenville State University (4-5-3, 2-5-2 MEC) on Wednesday afternoon.

"Obviously it is nice, I have been here a long time and I have really enjoyed it," said Shiels happily. "We have had a lot of outstanding players and I have had great coaches with me and that makes it fun."

The Pioneers started the contest strong with five shots on goal before the 35th minute, however senior Jordan Pasalaqua matched intensity by recording all five saves.

Notre Dame broke the stalemate in the 42nd minute as junior Miriam Szijarto produced a penalty kick goal after she side stepped around the GSU keeper, before being taken down. The Ravenna, Ohio native tallied her team-leading 10th goal of the season with the score.

The Falcons carried the momentum into the break with a 1-0 lead, before double their advantage in the 62nd minute. From outside the 18-yard box, junior Sophia Motolese laced a free kick goal over the outstretched arm of the GSU keeper and below the crossbar for a sensational goal (2-0), the second of the season for the Schnecksville, Pa. native.

After a corner kick was sent into the box, Szijarto put a header on target, but a last-ditch effort from the Pioneer defense turned the attempt away. However, amongst the chaos the GSU keeper received a handball violation, awarding NDC another penalty kick opportunity. This time, junior Louisa Follert joined the scoresheet with the first goal of her campaign, burying the shot in the lower right corner (3-0).

When asked about the offense getting into a groove lately, Shiels mentioned "Absolutely, it wasn't our prettiest game at times and it seemed like we really had to grind to get it done. But we have been finding ways to score and that makes things a lot easier."

Despite late chances from Glenville State, Pasalaqua and the Falcons earned the third shutout of the season, with a 3-0 win. The Madison, Ohio native picked up seven saves in the match, moving 24 saves away from tying Kristy Kolschetzky for the most saves by an NDC Falcon in program history. Moreover, the Madison, High School product produced the 33rd win and 25th shutout of her career, as the senior is now tied for the second-most wins in school history with Emilie LaMarche.

When asked about Pasalaqua's performance today, Shiels said "We put ourselves in a couple awkward positions and Jordan [Pasalaqua] bailed us out so it was nice she was able to do that and get herself a shutout."

Following another score today from Szijarto, the Archbishop Hoban High School product has cements herself in NDC program history, as she is tied for the ninth-most goals scored in a season, including the most goals scored in a campaign since Megan O'Connor tallied 10 in 2013. Szijarto entered the contest tied for the lead in the MEC and tied for 12th in the country in goals scored, marks that will continue to improve.

Notre Dame outshot Glenville State 17 (9) to 13 (7), as Szijarto and senior Kalie Blaising led the way with four shots apiece.

The Notre Dame College women's soccer team will be back in action on Sunday Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. when the Falcons travel to West Virginia State University.
