SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame College women's basketball (4-11, 3-6 MEC) team hosted West Virginia State University (12-2, 7-2 MEC) on Wednesday evening inside Murphy Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets got the best of the Falcons 93-69, as a result of a strong second quarter.
Both sides struggled to gain momentum in the first quarter, as WV State led 13-11 after the first 10 minutes. Despite the slow first frame, NDC played resiliently in the period by erasing a 6-0 deficit to take a 7-6 lead. The Falcons held the Yellow Jackets to 6-23 (26.1%) from the floor during the quarter.
West Virginia State found their rhythm in the second quarter, claiming the frame 36-17, to lead 49-28 at the break.
The third quarter featured a back and forth battle, with the Yellow Jackets extending their lead to 67-43 with 10 minutes remaining.
Notre Dame got the offense going in the fourth quarter by tallying 26 points on 6-10 shooting from the floor, including 3-5 from three and 11-12 (91.2%) from the free throw line. However, WV State maintained their advantage to win 93-69.
The Falcons were led by freshman
Noel Weathers' 16 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor. Moreover, the Cincinnati, Ohio native corralled a team-high seven rebounds on the night.
Junior
Nadia Jackson added a career-high 12 points on 5-7 shooting, including 2-2 from three-point land. In addition, Jackson facilitated for NDC, tying the team-high and her career-high with four assists.
Fellow junior
Lizzie Imrie also tallied a team-high four assists, while securing five rebounds and scoring seven points.
As a team, Notre Dame shot 23-54 (42.6%) from the floor, 6-15 (40.0%) from three and 17-22 (77.3%) from the free throw line.
The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. as the Falcons travel to No. 13 University of Charleston.
