CANTON, Ohio – During Day two of the Hall of Fame City Classic, Notre Dame College (2-7) came out of the gate firing on all cylinders to take a straight set victory over Bloomsburg (1-5). In the second match, a valiant effort fell short in five sets to Edinboro (5-2).
In game one, NDC started off hot with a 7-1 lead via seven Falcon kills. After senior
Kaye Dregalla nabbed the first point of the contest, junior
Kelsie Palmer and sophomore
Samantha Comer contributed three kills each during the run. NDC kept the first set locked down, by winning 25-10 after junior
Carly Emerson's kill.
In the second set, Bloomsburg led 3-1, before Notre Dame generated a 10-0 run, fueled by senior
Carli Derda's five straight service aces to lead 11-3. After BU closed the gap to a 15-13 Falcon lead, NDC posted a 6-0 run to grab a comfortable 21-14 advantage. The Falcons would polish off the set, 25-14.
In the final set, the Huskies fought until the very end, including moving in front early, 5-1. However, NDC was able to flip the score to 14-11 after claiming eight of nine points in a row. Freshman
Ryleigh Ronald and junior
Brittany Miller got in on the action during the aforementioned run to aid the Falcons. BU was able to generate a run of their own (5-0) to reclaim the lead, 16-14. The rest of the final stanza went back and forth, with Derda putting the final touches on the Notre Dame sweep, 25-23.
The Notre Dame offense was paced by Palmer and Comer's game-high seven kills apiece, followed by Dregalla with six and Derda with five. The attack featured an efficient .253 hit percentage on 33 total kills. Sophomore
Jayme Zoeckler facilitated the NDC attack with a game-high 24 assists.
Derda notched a career-high six services aces, as NDC had 13 in the contest.
Defensively, sophomore libero
Kiley Kalina had a game-high 11 digs, followed by junior
Ellie Schenk's 10, as the Falcons posted 38 digs in the match. At the net,
Ryleigh Ronald swatted five attacks to lead the game.
In game two, NDC picked up where they left off in the morning by holding a 10-3 lead with Comer contributing three kills during the run. However, Edinboro was able to battle back and tie the contest up at 12-12, 13-13 and 15-15. Notre Dame was able to regain control of the set, as Palmer polished it off 25-21.
The second set started tight, but the Fighting Scots opened up a 15-9 lead. The Falcons were able to battle back this time and take a late 23-20 lead after an EU error. However, Edinboro grabbed the final five points of the set to win 25-23.
The third set began back and forth with NDC holding a narrow 9-8 lead. The Falcons then carved out a 10-0 run to hold a comfortable 19-8 advantage, with Palmer posting four kills during the run. Edinboro fought back to put pressure on NDC, but the Falcons ultimately claimed the stanza 25-22 after a Dregalla kill.
Another tight set ensued in the fourth as the score was tied eight different times, as the scoreboard showed just 13-13. Next, EU broke away with a 7-1 run to move ahead, 20-14. The Falcons made the set interesting by tying the score at 22-22, 24-24 and 25-25, before the Fighting Scots ultimately won, 27-25.
During the fifth and final set, Notre Dame used a 5-0 run to grab an 11-6 lead. However, Edinboro used a late 6-0 run to win the match, 16-14.
The duo of Palmer and Comer paced the NDC offense once more with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. For Palmer it is a season-high mark, while Comer notches a new career best with 13.
Zoeckler managed the setting duties again for Notre Dame and turned out a career-high 45 assists to aid Palmer, Comer and company.
Defensively, Kalina was featured at libero where she registered a career-high 34 digs. Her 34 digs are tied for the tenth most digs in a match in school history, while also being the seventh best mark in a five-set match in school history. Kalina was joined by Zoeckler's season-high 16 digs.
At the net, Ronald turned in a career-high six blocks, while Comer tied a career best with five.
As a team, NDC had 55 kills, on .153 hit percentage, to go with 51 assists, 93 digs, 11 blocks and five service aces.
The Notre Dame College volleyball team will be back in action on Tuesday Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. for the Falcons' home-opener against Lake Erie College.
