WHEELING, W.Va. – Entering the contest as one of the most accurate teams in the country, the Notre Dame College women's soccer team (3-3-2, 2-2-2 MEC) posted 11 of their 20 shots on goal, as the Falcons soared to a 3-0 victory at Wheeling University (4-5, 4-3 MEC) on Wednesday evening. Junior
Madison Marino tied her career-high with two goals scored, as senior goalkeeper
Jordan Pasalaqua registered NDC's fourth clean sheet of the season and the 21
st of her career. The Madison High School product is now tied for second most shutouts for a career in NDC program history.
Notre Dame got the action started early as junior
Kalie Blaising netted her second goal of the season in the 10
th minute. Blaising received a stellar cross from freshman
Emma Buda before she beat the WU keeper with a perfect touch, finally burying the ball into the back of the net (1-0).
The Falcons continued to send shots at the Cardinals keeper, before breaking through again in the 36
th minute. After hustling and pressuring the WU defense, Marino stole the ball, took a touch, and scored to the lower left side. The Stow-Munroe Falls High School product doubled the Notre Dame advantage to 2-0.
NDC carried the 2-0 score into halftime, knowing very well that they must keep their foot on the gas, as Wheeling featured a potent offense which entered the contest averaging 19.3 shots per game, tied for the seventh best mark in the country.
During the second stanza, the intensity ramped up with three yellow cards being issues. In the 56
th minute, WU's Braedynn Porter and the Cardinal bench were cautioned, followed by NDC's freshman
Hannah Smith in 70
th.
Notre Dame was able to fend of Wheeling for the entire match, as Marino was assisted by sophomore
Miriam Szijarto in the 90th minute for her second goal of the game in the, sealing another road victory for head coach
Mike Shiels and the Falcons (3-0).
NDC is now 2-0-2 on the road inside the MEC, a true testament to the fight inside this Falcon locker room.
Offensively, Notre Dame was led by Marino's two goals on six shots taken. Her two-goal performance ties her career best which she set last season when she netted a pair of goals vs. Glenville State on Oct. 31, 2021.
Joining Marino, was Blaising's second goal of the season after she took three shots. Buda (3), senior
Blake Allen (2) and junior
Anaya Edwards (2) also added multiple shots on the night.
In goal, Pasalaqua logged a season-high seven saves en route to her fourth shutout this season. The Madison, Ohio native now owns 21 career clean sheets which is tied with Emilie LaMarche (2007-10) for the second most in a career in NDC program history.
Notre Dame tallied 20 shots including 11 on target, to go with three corner kicks. Wheeling featured similar numbers with 17 shots and seven on goal, to go with three corner kicks, however NDC ultimately found the back of the net three times.
The Notre Dame College women's soccer team will be back in action on Sunday Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. when the Falcons travel to West Virginia Wesleyan College.
