FROSTBURG, Md. – Notre Dame College has shown this year that they will never give up on a ball in the air and they will never give up on a chance to win a set. On Tuesday, the Falcons fell behind early in all three sets, on the road, but fought back to sweep Frostburg State University in a very competitive match.
Frostburg State did not waste time as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but they allowed the Falcons to gain momentum with a bad set and three attack errors. The Falcons got an ace by freshman
Sierra Nausieda and a kill by junior
Brittany Miller to tie the set at six.
Once again, FSU went on a run and put up five consecutive points to grab an 11-6 lead. Later in the set, an ace by the Bobcats' Edwyna Lainez gave Frostburg an 18-13 advantage. The home team held a 24-20 lead in the opening set, before a collapse allowed NDC to push through for the win.
A block by junior
Kelsie Palmer and Miller, an ace by senior
Carli Derda and an FSU error pulled the Falcons within one point, before Palmer took over. She had four kills in the first set, and finished with 11 in the match, but none were bigger than her back-to-back kills to give Notre Dame a 25-24 lead, capping a 5-0 NDC run.
The Falcons closed the first set on a 7-1 run to win by a score of 27-25.
In the second set, Frostburg looked like they made all the right adjustments and grabbed a 6-0 lead. The Falcons started to chip away at the lead, pulling within one, three times, but had trouble breaking through. Finally, they strung together four straight points as Palmer and freshman
Ryleigh Ronald combined for a block and each of them had a kill to help put NDC in front for the first time in set two, 17-16.
The Bobcats battled and tied the set four times, but never took the lead back. After taking the lead, NDC totaled five kills and two aces down the stretch to win the set, 25-23.
Despite early kills by Palmer and Ronald, early in the third set, Frostburg State grabbed an 8-3 advantage. The Bobcats pushed the lead six, 15-9, before the Falcons started the third comeback. Palmer had a kill and then she combined with Ronald on another block. That gave NDC some life as they went on a 6-1 run to pull within one point, 16-15.
The Falcons fell behind by three, 18-15, and then put the hammer down, going on a dominant 10-1 run to close the set with a 25-19 win. During the final run, senior
Kaye Dregalla had three kills and an assisted block and sophomore
Jayme Zoeckler added four assists and a kill.
Dregalla ended the game with 10 kills, and now has had double-digit kills in three straight contests. Zoeckler had 38 assists, which is tied for eighth most in NDC history for a three-set match.
Ronald finished with three solo blocks and five total blocks, while Palmer had a season-high four blocks. Sophomore
Kiley Kalina led the team with 15 digs.
Frostburg had six more attempts in the match than NDC, but finished with 21 attack errors.
The Falcons will come home to host Wheeling University, on Sept. 30. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
