Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer secures fifth straight win in tough weather conditions

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Sunday, the rain began just before the teams took the field and continued for most of the day as Notre Dame College put five goals on the scoreboard, the second most in a game this season, and beat West Liberty University, 5-0.

Just five games separated the first regular season matchup between NDC and WLU, on Sept. 7, and the second matchup, on Sunday. The Falcons made adjustments as the offense controlled the ball for much of the contest and West Liberty was held to just one shot.

Notre Dame broke through with a goal in the 21st minute. Freshman Jose Rivas found a way to push the ball through the defense as he fell on the turf. The ball rolled through to freshman Simao Coelho, who found the net to give NDC a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Taylor Dyson struck, fifteen minutes later, for the first of his two goals. With just under ten minutes to go in the first half, sophomore Marcus Vinicius Pereira sent the ball back to Dyson, who loaded up and sent a line drive into the goal from 37 yards away.

At halftime, the Falcons led 2-0 and outshot West Liberty 9-0 in the first 45 minutes.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Dyson struck again. With little resistance, he ran around and over the Hilltopper defense to find an open spot on the field to set and blast another shot past the WLU goalkeeper, Colton Callen.

Dyson had a chance at a hat trick, as he launched a free kick toward the WLU goal in the 56th minute, but it was saved. However, the ball rolled away from the goalie and that allowed sophomore Connor O'Reilly to score and give NDC a 4-0 lead.

The Falcons were relentless, taking 21 shots, including nine shots on goal, in the second half.

In the 76th minute, the ball entered the box and was sent back to sophomore Riwai Rangihuna-Stanton, who threaded the needle over the heads of the defenders and curved the pass to Ned Dry. Dry headed the ball in for NDC's fifth goal and Stanton was credited with his first career assist.

"It was a slower start than I would have liked, but we soon picked up the tempo and quality," said head coach Carl Nolan. "Overall, it was a good performance and a very good result."

NDC set a season-high with 30 shots in the game, and their 13 shots on goal tied a season-high. With two today, Dyson now has six goals on the season. Today, he took six shots with five of them on target.

Notre Dame will play a non-conference game on Sept. 28, at home against Seton Hill University. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
