Volleyball erases D'Youville in straight sets

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame College volleyball team (6-10) erased D'Youville College (4-11) on Sunday morning in straight sets. An all-around performance by the Falcons earned NDC a win on the final day of non-conference play.
 
The Saints opened the contest hot with a 6-2 lead. The Falcons fought their way back into the set, tying the score at 9-9. Upon tying the game, NDC ripped off an 8-0 run to spring in front 15-9. A late 6-0 run by Notre Dame, moved the score to 24-12 after a kill by junior Brittany Miller. Two points later, freshman Ryleigh Ronald would polish off the stanza 25-13.
 
In the set, D'Youville held a narrow 3-2 lead, before Notre Dame broke open a 15-0 run on the back of senior Carli Derda's serve. The St. Joseph High School product tied her career-high with six aces during the match, as she generated five during the aforementioned run. A back and forth ending to the frame would give way to a Derda kill and a 25-12 set victory.
 
Once again, D'Youville opened the final set with a quick 3-0 lead. Next, the two sides would battle to an 11-11 tie, following a pair of Saint points. Notre Dame would respond with a 9-1 run to grab a commanding 20-12 advantage. A prompt 4-0 run by the Falcons, capped off by a Kiley Kalina service ace, gave Notre Dame a 25-15 win inside Murphy Gymnasium.
 
The NDC offense was paced by Ronald's team-high nine kills, followed by sophomore Samantha Comer's eight and junior Kelsie Palmer's seven. Sophomore Jayme Zoeckler and junior McKenzie Andrix split the setting duties with 16 and 13 assists, respectively.
 
Along with tying her career-high, Derda's mark of six service aces is tied for the third most in a match in NDC program history.

Defensively, Kalina, Andrix and junior Ellie Schenk logged an even 12 digs a piece.
 
In comparing the two sides, Notre Dame recorded 40 kills on a .290 hit percentage, to go with 35 assists, 55 digs, 12 service aces and two blocks. D'Youville registered 24 kills on a .113 hit percentage, to go with 22 assists, 46 digs, one service ace and three blocks.
 
The Notre Dame College volleyball team will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. when the Falcons being their trek through the Mountain East Conference. West Liberty University will enter Murphy Gymnasium, before NDC hits the road later in the week.
