Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer defeats Wheeling, posts second shutout in three games

WHEELING, W.Va. – Notre Dame College and Wheeling University met for the second time in 2022 and closed out the regular season series. The Falcons won both contests by a score of 3-0. On Wednesday evening, NDC put the first goal on the scoreboard in the 20th minute and then added two more in the second half.

In the first 45 minutes of the road matchup in Wheeling, Notre Dame took 12 shots to Wheeling's three. Within the first 12 minutes, NDC had taken four shots, with two of them on target and saved by Wheeling goalkeeper Flem Sandt.

After a corner kick was taken by NDC in the 20th minute, the ball bounced off of the crossbar and ricocheted off a Falcon before landing in front of sophomore Connor O'Reilly, who found the net for the first goal of the contest. Senior Jordan Lewis and junior Leonardo Palmieri were credited with assists.

The rest of the half, Notre Dame took two shots on goal, while Wheeling had one. At halftime, Notre Dame held a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Taylor Dyson, who took five shots in the game, launched the first shot on goal of the second half. The ball was headed to the bottom left, but was saved by Sandt.

Less than three minutes later, Notre Dame quickly got much-needed insurance goals. Dyson found O'Reilly in the 64th minute and, after scoring his first goal as a member of the Falcons earlier in the game, he sent the ball past the Wheeling keeper for his second goal.

Not long after O'Reilly's goal put NDC up 2-0, freshman Jose Rivas added his name to the scoresheet, on his only shot of the night.

The Falcons took seven shots in the second half, and finished the contest with a total of 19.

For the third time this season, Notre Dame has scored three, or more, goals. Over the past two contests, the Falcons have combined to score 10 times.

NDC's Pedro Alves saved two shots and, along with the rest of the Notre Dame defense, finished off the fourth shutout of the young season.

The Falcons play at home on Sunday, Sept. 18, hosting Frostburg State University. The scheduled start time is 2 p.m.
