Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer sets season-highs in win over Concord

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame College offense had been shutout in back-to-back games, but on Sunday, they made the adjustments needed to put a season-high seven goals on the scoreboard. The Falcons scored three in the first half and four in the second to defeat Concord University, 7-1.

"We freshened things up from the last game," said head coach Carl Nolan. "We looked a little heavy and tired, so we made eight different changes in the lineup and it was nice to see they responded to that. It was a case of just being consistent and getting the ball into dangerous areas, around the 18-yard box, and trying to create as many chances as we can."

Playing at home for the first time in a week in-a-half, Notre Dame opened up the scoring in the 5th minute. On the right side of the field, freshman Jose Rivas crossed the ball, which led to a pass from freshman Koen van Helvert to senior Jordan Lewis. Lewis let the ball hit the turf and then sent the ball into the net.

NDC continued to threaten on Concord's side of the field. Between the 9th minute and 16th minute, NDC had three shots that were either on goal or just off the mark.

Both offenses went quiet for the next 20 minutes. Concord's Andrew Beohler sent a shot toward goal that was saved by NDC's Rafael Baia. And a little over a minute later, Notre Dame put another goal on the board. Sophomore Taylor Dyson passed ahead to senior Ned Dry and Dry tapped it back to Dyson who launched the ball from 35 yards away, over the head of Concord's Keegan Grant for the goal.

In the final five minutes of the first half, the teams traded goals. The Mountain Lions scored their only goal of the game in the 40th minute, but NDC responded four minutes later, when Rivas scored his first career goal.

The Falcons came out of the locker room firing in the second half. In the 49th minute, Dyson scored his second goal of the day. Sophomore Callum Cleary brought the ball down the right side of the field, sent a pass in front of the goal and Dyson made an incredible play, diving forward and using a header to put the ball in the net.

A little over two minutes later, Notre Dame was on the attack again. Senior Jack Milford fell but found a way to push the ball forward to Dyson. The Falcons' striker gathered the ball and sent it in for a hat trick. He had a career-high three goals and six shots in the game.

Concord was called for a handball in the box, which led to a penalty kick in the 64th minute. Sophomore Marcus Vinicius Pereira took the PK and put it top left, while CU's goalkeeper went to the right.

The final goal of the contest came in the 66th minute, when freshman Simao Coelho scored his first career goal after he was in the right position off of a deflected ball. That gave NDC a 7-1 lead.

Tommy Smith, who entered the game as Concord's goalkeeper in the second half, made five saves in the final 45 minutes.

As a team, Notre Dame took a season-high 24 shots, including 17 in the second stanza. They also had 13 shots on target.

Milford's two assists were the first of his career.

The Falcons will travel to Wheeling University, on Sept. 14. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
