Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer puts up season-high three goals in another shutout win

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College has gotten off to a pretty good start at home this season. In two games, they have two wins and two shutouts. On Wednesday afternoon, the Falcons' Ned Dry scored with a few seconds to go in the first half and then NDC added two goals in the second stanza to beat Wheeling University, 3-0.

Notre Dame's defense held Wheeling to just three first half shots, but two of the them were on target. WU's best opportunity of the game came in 41st minute, when the ball was taken away from the Falcons' defense by the Cardinals. Miguel Martin was one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but freshman Rafael Baia ran toward Martin and fell to the ground to grab the ball.

On offense, NDC certainly had the opportunities as they took 11 shots, including six on goal, in the first 45 minutes. Things finally came together for the home team with about 10 seconds remaining before halftime. The NDC defense took possession and the Falcons had momentum up the field. Freshman Simao Coelho took the ball down the right side of the field, came to a stop with a defender on his left, and sent a pass into the box. Ned Dry was running up to the goal and slid to put the ball into the net.

"We were a bit par in the first half, but I felt like we would be able to come through and score, no matter what," Dry said. "I think [the goal] was a good play, good teamwork. I happened to get on the score sheet and that's what I'm there to do."

Wheeling had another solid chance in the 51st minute, when Diego Buenano was in position in the box and sent a pass to Richard Afolayanka. However, Afolayanka's shot dribbled off the right.

After a yellow card and free kick setup just outside the box, sophomore Taylor Dyson had a pinball goal in the 68th minute. He took a shot off the set piece that bounced off the right post over the left post and then into the net.

Less than 10 minutes later, Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead off another set piece. Dyson lined up about 40 yards away and sent a pass into the box. Through a tussle in front of the goal, junior Antonio Bittencourt found a way and scored for the second time this season.

"I feel like today, although we were a bit sloppy, we showed our quality, especially in the final third when we did get our chances," Dry mentioned. "We showed we can be a threat both in set pieces and in open play."

Coelho and senior Jack Milford each took three shots. Baia stopped three shots for the shutout.

The Falcons will have another test on the road when they visit No. 2 ranked University of Charleston, on Sept. 4. That match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
