Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Despite aggressive second half, men’s soccer falls in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – On Sunday afternoon, Notre Dame College out-shot the University of Charleston 9-7, which included eight shots in the second half. However, the No. 2 ranked Golden Eagles were able to score one goal in each half for a 2-0 victory of NDC.

Notre Dame's goalkeeper Rafael Baia went to work early in the game. Charleston was in a good spot on a free kick, as Felipe Mercado lined up. He sent the ball to the upper right corner, but Baia jumped to grab the shot out of the air.

Mercado was able convert in the 24th minute. He found some space and put the ball into the net, giving UC the lead. One minute later, Mercado, again, had a shot on goal that was saved.

On the offensive side for the Falcons, junior Antonio Bittencourt was the only Falcon to be in position to take a shot in the first 45 minutes.

NDC's strategy changed and the Falcons took six more shots than UC (8-2) in the second half.

The Golden Eagles did make a run on the Notre Dame defense, early in the second stanza. Just in front of the goal, Eduardo Barros sent a pass across to Giorgos Diakos and Diakos wasted no time, launching a shot past Baia and into the net in the 49th minute.

On the other end of the field, freshman Eden Ben Hagay made a nice move to get around a defender, stopping and putting the ball behind him and then switching directions. He sent the ball low and toward the goal, but UC goalkeeper Marc Torrado fell to the ground to make the stop.

Freshman Simao Coelho (57'), freshman Jared Rimmer (80') and sophomore Connor O'Reilly (84') all had shots on target the rest of the way, but could not sneak one in to get on the scoreboard.

Bittencourt, senior Ned Dry and Coelho all took two shots for NDC.

The Falcons will travel to West Liberty University, on Sept. 7 for a 5 p.m. start.
