Softball drops two close games against West Liberty; Rivera reaches 100 hits

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon, Notre Dame College fought back in game two of the doubleheader, but West Liberty University was able to take both contests. In game one, the Hilltoppers grabbed a 2-0 victory and then won game two by a score of 7-5. Senior Daniele Rivera had three hits on the day and now has over 100 career hits in just two full seasons with the Falcons.

In game one, West Liberty's Mackenzie Amend (14-5) picked up win number 14 on the season after pitching five shutout innings. The WLU offense scored one run in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The top of the order had the hits for the Falcons, as sophomore Katelyn DeWeese singled, Rivera had two hits and freshman Emma Gumont added the fourth hit.

Freshman Allison Weilnau (6-10) started in the circle and pitched well, allowing one run on two hits and struck out three hitters. Sophomore Chloe Vance entered the game in the sixth inning and allowed one solo home run in two innings of work.

Game two featured more offense as the teams combined for 12 runs. It began in the first inning, as West Liberty plated two runs. But, the Falcons cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first as DeWeese and Rivera hit back-to-back singles, Gumont moved them over with a groundout and Marsh hit an RBI groundout to score one.

Notre Dame's pitcher Madison Olszewski buckled down and put the Hilltoppers down in order in the second and third inning and used a double play in the fourth to face the minimum in that frame, as well.

The Falcons' offense put together one of the rarest performances in the third inning, with two inside-the-park homers. DeWeese led off with a shot down the left field line. The left fielder tried to make a diving play, but was unsuccessful and the ball rolled to the wall. DeWeese touched home plate for her first career home run. Then, with one out, Gumont singled and junior Emily Marsh hit a ground-rule double. Senior Alexi Maciejowski hit the ball down the right field line that bounced fair and continued to roll. All three runners scored and Maciejowski was credited with her 11th home run of the season, which put her in second place in the Mountain East Conference.

The four-run third inning gave the Falcons a 5-2 advantage. And NDC looked to add on in the fourth inning as sophomore Meadow Odum doubled before sophomore Ellen Wheatland was hit by a pitch. West Liberty then made a pitching change and Notre Dame did not bring a run in.

West Liberty jumped back on top in the fifth. With runners on second and third, Sidney Little singled one run home and advanced to second base on the throw. One run scored on an error and then Annie Paterson hit her second home run of the day, a three-run shot, to give WLU a 7-5 lead.

Vance entered game two in relief and pitched 2 2/3 solid innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

DeWeese and Marsh both had two hits in game two.

NDC will wait to see if it will be necessary to makeup games against West Virginia Wesleyan, which were postponed on April 3. If those games do not get rescheduled, the Falcons will get ready for the MEC Tournament, beginning May 6.
