PHILIPPI, W.Va. – After winning three of four games last weekend, Notre Dame College defeated Alderson Broaddus, twice, on Friday. It was the Falcons' first road doubleheader sweep of the season, and NDC has now won five of their last six games. In game one, NDC won 7-5, in eight innings, and took game two by a score of 3-0.
In game one, sophomore
Katelyn DeWeese tied a program record with four hits. She led off the first inning with a single. She stole second, and moved to third on a single by senior
Daniele Rivera. Freshman
Emma Gumont then brought the first run home with a groundout and junior
Emily Marsh singled to score the second run.
AB scored one run in the bottom of the second inning, but NDC responded right away. In the top of the third, the Battlers changed pitchers and DeWeese singled, once again. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored when Gumont doubled to left field. Two batters later, senior
Alexi Maciejowski doubled for an RBI and NDC led 4-1.
A sacrifice fly and a single plated two runs for the Battlers in the bottom of the third, but the Falcons came back with a run in the fourth inning. Sophomore
Meadow Odum scored on a wild pitch.
Alderson Broaddus tied the game with two in the bottom of the fifth and the score remained 5-5 as the teams entered extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Odum stepped up and hit her second home run of the season to put NDC back in front. DeWeese and Rivera both singled and then Marsh gave the Falcons an insurance run with Notre Dame's fourth hit of the inning.
DeWeese scored three times in the game, after going 4-for-5 at the plate. Rivera went 3-for-3 for her fifth three-hit game of the season. Both Marsh and Gumont had two RBI. In the circle, sophomore
Chloe Vance (5-5) picked up the win after entering the game with two out in the third inning and going 5 1/3 innings. She struck out three hitters.
The pitching was the highlight of game two. NDC's starting pitcher
Madison Olszewski (5-6) went 4 1/3, holding AB scoreless and struck out two. Vance got her second save of the season by throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
The Battlers recorded eight hits and had opportunities in the game, but could not push a run across.
In the top of the second, Maciejowski was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. She stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior
Mikaela Fording made it to first base on an error and the first run of the game scored on the play. After that miscue, three Falcons were walked, including Rivera with bases loaded, and NDC led 2-0.
The Falcons did not score again until the top of the sixth inning. Freshman
Ella Collinsworth singled and DeWeese singled again. Collinsworth came home on a fly ball to give NDC a 3-0 advantage.
DeWeese had two hits in game two and six on the day. Gumont and Rehm each had two hits, as well.
"Pitching today really stepped up. They worked hard as a staff, together, to get the wins," head coach
Kelsey Stopp said. "Our offense hit well today and executed when we needed to. AB made some great plays on a few swings. Today was a great team sweep and we're looking forward to the rest of the weekend."
Notre Dame will travel to Glenville State, tomorrow, for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
