AVON, Ohio – Stellar pitching outings from
Austin Mora and
Alex Dicke earn Notre Dame College (10-16, 6-4 MEC) a sweep of Davis & Elkins College (4-18, 1-9 MEC) on Saturday afternoon. Both pitchers tossed complete games, with Mora allowing four hits and four runs (one earned), paired with seven strikeouts and three walks for his second win of the season. Dicke allowed four hits on two earned runs with four punchouts and four walks for his third win of the season.
The Senators began with a hot start, tallying three runs on four singles in the top of the first inning.
The Falcons responded and grabbed three runs back during the home half of the second inning.
Tyler Shadle singled and later scored via a
Michael Zeuli RBI single (3-1). Later in the inning,
Aaron Miller singled and plated Zeuli, (3-2) followed by Mendoza's RBI single which allowed Miller to score (3-3).
After D&E regained the lead in the top of the third inning,
Ben Ross led off the home half of the third with a solo home run to tie the game once again, 4-4.
During the bottom of the fifth inning, NDC doubled their run total to eight with five hits. Mendoza led off the inning with a single and
Nick Farrell brought him home with his fifth home run of the season (6-4).
Nick Petrolla singled, followed Shadle's double set NDC up with two runners in scoring position with two away. Stepping up in the clutch, Zeuli punched a single, plating both Falcons and doubling the NDC advantage to 8-4.
Mora cruised for the remaining two innings by refusing to allow a hit, ensuring NDC's 8-4 victory in game one.
In game two, the aforementioned Dicke dealt for Notre Dame to grab the win. DIcke began the game holding the Senators hitless for the first two frames, allowing the Falcons to grab an early lead.
During the bottom of the first, Farrell doubled and scored one batter later when Ross plated him on an RBI single (1-0).
Notre Dame scored a second run in the bottom of the second inning after Mendoza's RBI single plated Mittleman who reached via error (2-0).
In the top of the third inning, Davis & Elkins played resiliently and tied the ballgame at 2-2 with an RBI single and RBI groundout.
However, Notre Dame capitalized on D&E miscues during the home half of the third by posting five runs on three hits. After Ross led the inning off with a walk and stole second base,
Kyle Espineli singled to plate Ross and give NDC the lead, 3-2. Shadle and Zeuli continued their hot streaks with back-to-back RBI singles, pushing the Falcons in front 5-2.
Shane Mittleman reached on an error during the next at bat, allowing Shadle to score (6-2). Finally, Mendoza rounded out the third inning scoring for NDC with an RBI groundout, pushing Zeuli across and the Falcons ahead 7-2.
Notre Dame scored three insurance runs during the fifth inning, beginning with a Mittleman single. A few batters later, a Farrell RBI triple and Ross two-run home run moved NDC in front 10-2. Ross' homer marks his team leading ninth of the season and program record holding 20
th of his career.
The Falcons were not done scoring until the final out as NDC generated three more runs during the home half of the sixth. Petrolla led off with a single and later scored via Miller's fielder's choice (11-2). Mendoza concluded the scoring with a two-run single, plating Mittleman and Shadle who both reached base via walk (13-2).
Leading the way for Notre Dame on offense was Mendoza, Farrell and Shadle who tallied four hits each at the plate today. Mendoza also paced the team with five RBI's on the afternoon, followed by Ross and Zeuli's four apiece. Lastly, Ross (twice) and Farrell were the only two Falcons to homer on the day, further solidifying themselves as NDC's power hitters as no other Falcon has multiple homers this season.
Notre Dame College will be back in action on Sunday Apr. 3 for another doubleheader at Mercy Health Stadium starting at 1:00 p.m. The Falcons will welcome West Virginia Wesleyan College to town, who are most recently coming off their first win of the season (6-3 vs. Alderson Broaddus).
