SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon, Notre Dame College celebrated
Mikaela Fording,
Daniele Rivera and
Lexi Rehm on Senior Day. The Falcons struggled to get the offense going in game one, falling 5-1, but opened up the scoring in game two for an 8-1 victory to split the day.
Charleston scored a run in the first inning and a run in the fourth in game one. NDC had opportunities to tie or take the lead when they moved runners into scoring position in each of the first four innings. However, the Falcons did not score their first run until
Alexi Maciejowski hit her ninth home run of the season to center field in the sixth, cutting the UC lead to one, 2-1.
The Golden Eagles responded with three in the seventh to take a 5-1 advantage. Olivia Pelfrey was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score a run and then two scored on an error.
Rivera equaled her season-high with three hits, which included a double. Fording also tied her season-high with two hits.
Notre Dame's offense did not get going until the third inning of game two, but then they began to pour it on. Charleston scored in the first inning again, when Hannah Rose touched the plate because of a passed ball.
NDC pitcher
Madison Olszewski (4-6) picked up the win after allowing that one unearned run and setting a career mark with eight strikeouts.
Junior
Emily Marsh put her first mark on the game in the third. Runners had reached second and third, following a two-out error. Marsh then doubled to the fence in left-center to give Notre Dame a 2-0 lead.
"We knew that [Charleston's Morgan Hoppe] was throwing a lot of changeups, so we made adjustments the second time through the order," Marsh said. "She was a really good pitcher, so it was all about keeping the hands back throwing the bat at the ball."
The two-out magic continued in the fifth. Sophomore
Katelyn DeWeese singled to lead off the inning and three batters later, with two out, Marsh sent the ball over the fence in left-center for a two-run homer. Maciejowski then singled and Rehm doubled to center field to add another run and NDC led 5-1.
In the sixth inning, freshman
Ella Collinsworth pinch-hit and led off with a single. Once again, later in the inning with two out, Rivera, freshman
Emma Gumont and Marsh hit back-to-back-to-back singles. A second run scored on Marsh's hit because of a throwing error. Notre Dame's lead increased to seven runs (8-1).
Marsh tied a career-high with three hits, but set a career mark with five runs batted in, which is also tied for sixth most in a game in program history.
NDC hits the road to take on Alderson Broaddus University on April 20. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
