Falcons fall twice to FSU on Saturday

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – NDC (18-19, 13-7 MEC) fell during both games to Fairmont State (19-16, 14-6), 5-4 in eight innings and 5-3 in the series finale. The Falcons earned a 2-2 split during the pivotal MEC North Division series, with one game separating the two sides.

Notre Dame opened the scoring in the second inning with three runs on four hits. Nick Farrell led the inning off with a single to right field, followed by Kyle Espineli's double down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position. Nick Petrolla brought both Falcons home with a two-run single to right field, moving NDC in front 2-0. Later in the inning, Shane Mittleman doubled to right field, scoring Petrolla (3-0).

Fairmont State got onto the board during the home half of the third inning with an RBI triple and RBI double in back-to-back at bats, moving the score to 3-2 NDC.

Austin Mora's fielder's choice during the top of the fourth inning, brought home Tyler Shadle who scored after his leadoff single to center field (4-2).

The FSU Falcons claimed game one with timely late game hits. A two-run homer in the seventh tied the contest at 4-4, and a single to center field during the eighth did the trick, 5-4. The win snapped NDC's season-long five game win streak.

Kyle Farrell pitched a great outing for NDC on the mound to earn a no decision. He tossed six innings allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out four and allowing zero walks.

In game two, FSU led off the game with a solo home run, but Nate Miller got the runs started for NDC in the second with an RBI double down the left field line. Espineli scored on the play after his lead off single to right field (1-1).

Espineli put Notre Dame in front with an RBI double to left field during the third, scoring N. Farrell who singled earlier in the frame (2-1).

Fairmont State grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of RBI singles (3-2).

However, Espineli's hot day continued with his second RBI of the game in the fifth inning to knot the score back at 3-3. The first baseman singled to left field, scoring Aaron Miller who walked to lead off the frame.

The game winning runs were scored during the home half of the fifth inning with a two-run home run to left field by the FSU Falcons, 5-3.

On offense, Notre Dame was led by Espineli who tallied four hits, including a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish in game two. N. Farrell added three hits, as a handful of NDC Falcons recorded two hits on the day. In addition, Espineli paced NDC with two doubles, followed by N. Miller, Mittleman and Ross each with one. The double for N. Miller tallies the first double of his career.

Notre Dame College will be back in action on Wednesday Apr. 20 at 2:00 p.m. for a non-conference bout with Malone in Canton, Ohio.
