TIFFIN, Ohio – For the second consecutive season, Notre Dame College opened the campaign against Tiffin University. For the second consecutive season, NDC comes away with the victory. On Sunday afternoon, the Falcons were able to win 17-4, with
Emileigh Scott and
Joselyn Storm combining for seven goals.
Megan Dano broke a program record with six assists.
The first half went according to plan for NDC. For the first time, women's lacrosse is playing four quarters and to begin the opening quarter, senior
Mackenzie Levine made a great save on a free position shot and then the Falcons brought the ball down the field. That led to the first goal of the season, and first collegiate goal, for freshman
Joselyn Storm with 13:11 on the clock.
Storm made her presence known on defense as well, as she wasted no time causing a turnover after her goal.
The Falcons would score two more times in the first quarter. Around the seven-minute mark, sophomore
McKenna Kincaid's shot was saved, but the Falcons regained possession with a ground ball. Another freshman,
Merryn Eaton, scored the second goal of the day on a free position shot.
Eaton would score again, with 3:29 on the clock, assisted by junior
Megan Dano. Dano recorded six assists on the day, setting the NDC mark for most in a game, after she tied the record last season with five.
The Falcons opened up the lead in the second quarter. Less than a minute in, Notre Dame drew a foul that gave Dano a free position shot. She would take the shot and scored. Scott won the next draw control, one of nine that she would win on the day, and eventually scored with 13:18 to go before halftime. Just about a minute later, sophomore
Charlotte Vari found Dano for NDC's sixth goal of the day.
The Falcons would take advantage of Tiffin turnovers. Four consecutive NDC goals came after the defense caused a turnover. Scott, freshman
Piper Hammond and Storm would score, all on assists by Dano.
Leading 10-0, Scott found Vari for the 11th goal of the game and then freshman
Lexington Carson put one in the back of the net on a free position shot. Notre Dame led 12-0 at the end of the first half. Over the first 30 minutes, NDC won eight draw controls and went 9-for-9 on clears.
The scoring onslaught continued into the third and it began with defense, once again. Vari caused a turnover and then Kincaid found Storm for NDC's 13th goal of the day.
Tiffin would get on the board in the third and scored three times in the quarter.
For Notre Dame,
Emileigh Scott scored a goal and assisted another in the final eight minutes. Vari had a goal and Dano tacked on another assist.
In the fourth quarter, Hammond caused a turnover and took a shot on the other end, but it was wide. The Falcons scooped up the groundball and Dano passed to Scott for another goal. Scott ended the day with a team-high four goals.
Carson scored her second goal with 10 minutes remaining in the game on another free position shots.
Mackenzie Levine started in goal and made three saves, and then freshman
Mackaleigh Levine entered in the final quarter and made three saves, as well.
"It's great to finally get out and play with this team," head coach
Ben Morhac said. "We have a lot of new faces and a lot of those new people contributing early. We are definitely going to enjoy this win but we need to start preparing for a really tough stretch of games."
The Falcons prepare for their home opener against Northern Michigan University on March 11. That game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
