Women’s lacrosse scores 19 goals against West Virginia Wesleyan; Hardy sets career-highs

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – On Wednesday afternoon, Notre Dame College had its biggest offensive output of the season, scoring at least three goals in each quarter and defeating West Virginia Wesleyan College, 19-5. Senior Danyelle Hardy returned to the field and totaled nine points (four goals and five assists), which is tied for fifth in program history for a single game.

Notre Dame put the first four goals on the board. After both goalkeepers made an early save, NDC was on the attack, sending three shots toward the W.Va. Wesleyan goal in the span of a minute. Freshman Piper Hammond was able to convert on the first goal of the game with 10:59 on the clock.

Sophomore Charlotte Vari and freshman Joselyn Storm then scored back-to-back goals, both assisted by Hardy. With under two minutes to go in the first quarter, the Falcons struck for two more goals and led 7-2 after 15 minutes.

Junior Nia Griffith caused an early turnover for Notre Dame and on the other end of the field, Hammond scored her fourth goal of the contest, less than two minutes into the second quarter. She came into the game with four goals this season.

The Bobcats would score once in the second, but the NDC offense responded by putting up four consecutive goals going into halftime. After the WVWC goal, Notre Dame's defense caused two turnovers and goalkeeper Mackenzie Levine saved two shots. At the halftime break, the Falcons led 12-3.

Hardy was able to score at the 9:43 mark in the third quarter to give NDC a ten goal lead. Just over a minute later, Hardy found senior Ebony Reddick for her first goal of the game.
Levine saved a free position shot with 4:35 on the third quarter clock, which led to the 15th goal of the contest, and fourth of the game for Hardy.

Freshmen Hannah Gjaltema and Madison Hauffman each scored in the fourth quarter. Gjaltema assisted on a couple goals in the game and she also caused a turnover in the final stanza.

"We are excited to start conference 1-0," said head coach Ben Morhac. "Always a great way to start and it was nice seeing a number of different names on the stat sheet. It was awesome having Dany Hardy back on the field doing what Dany does best. We had Madi Hauffman and Hannah Gjaltema with their first collegiate goals. Good day all around. We are going to enjoy it for now but it's on to the next one."

Hardy scored in a game for the first time since March 6, 2020, and she now has 64 goals in her career. She set a career-high with five assists and nine points. Hammond set a career-high in goals (four) and recorded her first assist of the campaign. Vari set season-highs with three goals, two assists and two caused turnovers. Griffith finished with a season-high four caused turnovers and four groundballs. Freshman Lexington Carson finished with her first assist of her career, along with had a career-high three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

The Falcons will come home on April 2, to host Frostburg State. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
