ATHENS, W.Va. – Notre Dame College (8-15, 4-4 MEC) continued their MEC road trip against Concord University (14-5-1, 4-2 MEC) on Monday afternoon. The Falcons earned a split of the series for the second straight day, after going 1-1 at Glenville State yesterday, NDC won game one on this occasion 6-3, before falling 10-3 during the second contest.
The Falcons jumped on the scoreboard first in game one after
Ben Ross plated
Austin Mora on a sacrifice fly to center field (1-0).
The Mountain Lions would answer in the fourth with a two-out, two-run single to center field, pushing CU ahead 2-1.
Notre Dame would turned right back around and hung five runs in the fifth inning to move in front 6-2.
Michael Zeuli and
Shane Mittleman began the inning by reaching base via hit by pitch and error, respectively. Mora proceeded to execute a perfect sacrifice bunt, allowing
Alec Mendoza to follow up and plate the two Falcon baserunners, regaining the lead (3-2).
Nick Farrell singled to left center, driving in Mendoza to continue the scoring (4-2).
Kyle Espineli grounded out to shortstop, allowing Ross to score, followed by
Nick Petrolla doubling to right center, allowing Farrell to score (6-2). This marked the second straight contest in which NDC has totaled five runs in an inning after the Falcons scored five runs during the fourth inning of game two against Glenville State on Sunday.
Calvin Andringa started the contest, but was removed after 1.1 innings of hitless baseball due to an injury.
Kyle Farrell replaced the Beverwijk, Netherlands native and cruised to his first win of the season. K. Farrell tossed 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out two and walking one.
Aaron Miller entered in the seventh inning, allowing just one hit and striking out one, en route to his team leading fourth save of the season.
Game two began with a jolt from
Ben Ross in the top of the first inning, to put Notre Dame on top early, once again. His home run to left field totaled his team-leading seventh four bagger of the season and program leading 18
th of his career.
However, the Mountain Lions responded in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to knot the game back at 1-1. Concord would extend their lead with three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to quickly jump ahead 8-1.
During the fifth inning, the Falcons loaded the bases and
Shane Mittleman cut the deficit with a two-run single to center field, scoring
Nate Miller and A. Miller and making the score 8-3.
Leading the day on offense for Notre Dame was Petrolla with a team-high three hits, followed by Ross with two. Ross and Mittleman carried the team with two RBIs a piece, followed Mendoza, N. Farrell, Espineli and Petrolla with one each. In terms of extra base hits, Ross' solo home run was joined by Petrolla who roped two doubles, and Mora and Espineli who enjoyed a double a piece.
Notre Dame will be back in action tomorrow Mar. 29 for their fifth contest in the last three days. NDC will host Mercyhurst University at 2:00 p.m. at Mercy Health Stadium in Avon, Ohio for a non-conference nine-inning affair.
