WHEELING, W.Va. – The last time Notre Dame College scored over 17 runs in a game was April of 2012. On Sunday, the Falcons bounced back after a tough 7-6 loss in game one, scoring 18 runs on 15 hits in an 18-11 victory in the second game of the day.
In game one, NDC jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead. NDC scored their first run after a pair of errors and a single by senior
Daniele Rivera. With runners on second and third, senior
Alexi Maciejowski doubled to clear the bases.
Wheeling responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, but junior
Emily Marsh tied the game with an RBI single through the left side of the infield in the second inning. The Falcons then took a 5-4 lead in the third inning when senior
Lexi Rehm put a ball over the left field fence.
A sacrifice fly allowed the Cardinals to tie the game at five in the fifth inning. Maciejowski came through again with a go-ahead home run to right-center field to put NDC in front, 6-5, in the top of seventh.
Wheeling came right back in the bottom of the seventh and scored two runs for a comeback 7-6 victory.
Rivera, Maciejowski and Rehm all had two hits. Maciejowski drove in three RBI.
The second game was an offensive showcase. The teams combined for 29 runs and 29 hits. NDC had three separate innings of five runs, or more. Notre Dame's 18 runs in a game ranks fourth in program history.
Again, the Falcons jumped out to a big lead in the first inning. Sophomore
Katelyn DeWeese walked and Rivera singled. Freshman
Emma Gumont homered to center field for the first time in her career to put three on the scoreboard. Later in the inning, with runners on second and third, Rehm doubled them both home. She would score the 6th run of the inning on a passed ball.
Gumont came up in the second inning and plated another run with a single. The Falcons would score their eighth run on an error.
Leading 8-3, with one out in the third, NDC's sophomore
Meadow Odum walked and advanced to second as DeWeese reached on a fielder's choice. Rivera tripled to bring them both home and, later in the inning, Maciejowski hit a three-run homer to left to put Notre Dame up by 10 runs.
Maciejowski had three hits and four RBI in game two. Throughout the entire day, she totaled five hits, seven RBI and two home runs.
Wheeling showed fight and pulled within three runs. The Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the third inning, four in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Leading 13-10, Notre Dame went back to work in the top of the seventh to secure the win. With one down, DeWeese tripled and Rivera hit an RBI single. Gumont singled and both Gumont and Rivera advanced to second and third, respectively. Maciejowski singled to score one and then senior
Mikaela Fording gave Notre Dame an 18-10 lead with a three-run home run.
Rivera, Gumont and Maciejowski each had three hits. Rivera (3), Gumont (4), Maciejowski (4), Fording (3) and Rehm (2) combined for all 16 of the Falcons' runs batted in. In the pitcher's circle, junior
Kirsten Luksic gave NDC 3 1/3 solid innings of relief, allowing just two earned runs.
NDC softball will stay in the area as they take on West Liberty, tomorrow, at 12 p.m.
