Women’s lacrosse plays two non-conference games this weekend

This Week: Notre Dame College women's lacrosse returns to Mueller Field to battle Northern Michigan University, on March 11, at 3 p.m. The Falcons stay home to battle Lake Erie College, on March 13, with a start time of 2 p.m.

Schedule Update: The game against Lake Erie on Sunday was originally scheduled for March 3, but was postponed due to snow and ice.

Records: Notre Dame is 1-0 after defeating Tiffin 17-4 last weekend. Northern Michigan has started the season 4-2 and Lake Erie is currently 0-2.

Coaches Corner: Ben Morhac is in his third season at the helm of the Notre Dame program. He has a record of 15-6 with a 9-1 mark in the MEC. The head coach of Northern Michigan is Lindsey LeMay, who has a record of 12-13 in three seasons. Meaghan Smith is in her second season at Lake Erie. LEC did not play the past two seasons.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) top 25 poll. In the final 2021 regional rankings, Notre Dame was sixth in the Midwest Region.

Series History: Notre Dame is 0-5 all-time against Lake Erie, but the Falcons have not played the Storm since 2017. Against Northern Michigan, NDC is 0-2 after playing NMU in 2017 and 2018.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame was able to grab a 17-4 win over Tiffin University, last Sunday. The Falcons jumped out to a 12-0 halftime lead in their first game of the season. It was the second consecutive season opening win over Tiffin for NDC. To begin the 2021 campaign, NDC won by just two goals, 14-12. The Falcons' 17 goals scored was the most in an NDC season opener since the 2019 season, when they defeated Ashland University, 18-11. Emileigh Scott led the Falcons with four goals and was credited with the game-winner against Tiffin.

After the win, Notre Dame swept the Mountain East Conference weekly honors. Megan Dano won Offensive Player of the Week after totaling eight points. She scored two goals and had an NDC record six assists. At one point in the second quarter, she assisted on three consecutive goals. Piper Hammond was the Defensive Player of the Year after finishing the game with three caused turnovers.

Noting the Wildcats: Northern Michigan played its first game of the season on Feb. 18, losing 19-9 against No. 4 ranked Lindenwood. Last week, NMU played three games, going 2-1. Northern Michigan lost to Rockhurst, 15-12, defeated Missouri Western State, 14-12, and beat Wartburg, 17-4. On the road against Missouri Western, the Wildcats scored two goals in the final 24 seconds to win.

Maddi Bast has scored 16 goals, while Madeline Bittell already has 20 points, as she has totaled 13 goals and seven assists and leads the team with 21 draw controls. Northern Michigan has scored 84 goals this season.

Noting the Storm: Lake Erie has scored just three goals in their first two games this season. LEC's stop in South Euclid will be their third game of the week. The Storm lost 17-2 on the road against Lincoln Memorial, on March 7, and fell by a score of 15-1 to the University of Charleston, on March 9. Against LMU, Lake Erie allowed five goals in the first quarter and six in the third quarter and LEC went 13-for-26 on clear attempts. Against UC, the Storm took just six shots.
