ELKINS, W.Va. – Four of the five starters for Notre Dame College scored in double-digits, while
Andre Harris and
Daylin Lee each set a season-high with 18 points, on Wednesday evening. NDC secured its first road win of the year by outscoring Davis & Elkins College by 10 points in the second half to win by a score of 74-63.
Although the three-point shot did not fall for the Falcons early in the game, they found ways to get the ball inside for points in the paint. NDC's first four made baskets were either layups or close range jumpers. With 14:42 to go in the first half, the Falcons trailed by just a point, 9-8.
At the 8:25-mark in the first half, Notre Dame had fallen behind by seven points, 24-17, but they would make a run over the next four minutes. Lee was fouled and made a pair of free throws before the defense took over.
The Senators were in the backcourt, trying to get the ball across the line when Harris jumped up and intercepted the pass. He would take it in for the layup. After Davis & Elkins turned the ball over by stepping out of bounds, Lee would cut to the basket and make a layup with an assist by Harris.
Still trailing by three with under five minutes to go, senior
Jaedon Willis found Harris for a triple to tie the game at 26. After another D&E missed shot, Willis pushed the ball forward quickly for a fastbreak layup to give NDC a 28-26 lead. The Falcons' grabbed that lead with an 11-2 run and would not give it back for the rest of the half.
Notre Dame took a 34-33 lead into the halftime break. Harris had 13 points and Lee added 10 in the first 20 minutes of action. Both teams shot the ball around 44-percent from the field, but combined to go 5-for-23 from three-point range and 4-for-13 from the free throw line.
Early in the second half, the teams began to trade buckets. Defense, once again, came up big for Notre Dame when Willis stole the ball and passed it ahead to sophomore
Gbolahan Adio for a dunk. NDC would finish the game with 21 points off turnovers.
A quick 5-0 run by D&E put the Senators back in front, 41-39, with 16:21 remaining in the second half. Between the 16:46-mark and the 14:58-mark, Davis & Elkins maintained its lead by making four consecutive shots.
NDC slowly started chipping into the Senators lead and with eight and-a-half minutes remaining, the Falcons started an important run. An offensive rebound by sophomore
Kaleb Torrence led his first made jumper of the game. On the next possession, sophomore
Jamarr Talbert Jr. was fouled and hit two free throws to tie the game at 51.
The Falcons would cap the 6-0 run when Talbert grabbed an offensive board and found Adio for the layup to give Notre Dame a 53-51 lead, with 7:14 remaining.
Davis & Elkins' Sam Rolle IV started heating up and put together a personal 6-2 run. That gave the Senators a 59-58 lead with just 4:15 on the clock.
The teams went back-and-forth down the stretch and although Notre Dame would grab the lead, D&E was never far behind. Rolle made two free throws to knot the score up at 63, but the first half heroes stepped up again in a big way for NDC.
On back-to-back possessions, Lee and Harris hit momentum swinging threes. Lee put one in from the top of the key and Harris knocked one down from the wing. In less than a minute, NDC had a six-point lead.
Davis & Elkins went stone cold and did not hit a shot from the field in the final 3:37 of the contest. In the final two minutes, the Senators missed three shots and turned the ball over twice. Notre Dame finished the game on an 11-0 run.
Harris shot the ball at 67-percent (8-for-12) and recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Lee shot 58-percent from the field and hauled in five boards. Adio had 10 points and has now scored in double-digits in the past two games.
The 63 points scored by D&E is the lowest total given up by the Falcons this season.
NDC comes home on Dec. 10, to play West Virginia Wesleyan College. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
