Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s basketball pulls away from Wheeling to start conference play with a victory

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – After walking away with a 36-point victory and scoring 102 points on Wednesday, Notre Dame College's offense was on full display again, on Saturday. The Falcons led Wheeling University by 20 points at halftime and defeated the Cardinals by a score of 91-71.

Neither team shot the ball well in the first three minutes, but Notre Dame would begin heating up from behind the three-point arc and immediately pushed its lead to double-digits. Five of the Falcons' first six made baskets were three pointers, including back-to-back makes by sophomore DeAirius Barker.

Barker would finish with a career-high 18 points in 24 minutes off the bench. He shot 7-for-9 from the field, including a 4-for-4 mark from three-point range. He hit three three-pointers in the first half.

When sophomore Obinna Ugwuakazi knocked down a pair of free throws, with 13:05 on the first half clock, the Falcons were already leading by 16 points, 19-3.

On the other side, Wheeling missed its first 10 shots from the field. The only points scored by the Cardinals in the first seven minutes of the game were free throws. Finally, with 12:46 on the clock, William Gabbert hit a three-pointer.

Wheeling cut the Falcons' lead to 10 points, as the Cardinals took advantage of a few NDC turnovers. However, Notre Dame found the bottom of the net again. Barker and sophomore Kaleb Torrence each knocked down a long range shot on back-to-back possessions.

The closest Wheeling would get the rest of the way would be seven points. After a layup by WU's Marcus Johnson made the score, 29-22, Notre Dame responded with a 17-4 run in the final 5:04 of the first half and led, 46-26, going into the intermission. During that final run, NDC went 9-for-11 at the free throw stripe.

Notre Dame shot just 35-percent (12-for-34) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, but went 9-for-16 (56-percent) from behind the three-point line.

Just like the first half, sophomore Gbolahan Adio made a three to open the scoring for the Falcons and Notre Dame increased its lead to 21 points, 49-28. The Falcons' largest lead in the second half would be 23 points.

Wheeling made a run at NDC with about eight minutes to go and would cut the deficit down to 11 points, with less than six minutes remaining.

Junior Kalil Camara and senior Jaedon Willis took over down the stretch. They combined to score 15 of the Falcons' final 17 points in the last 4:20 of the game.

Willis had 28 points in the contest, and a double-double with 10 rebounds. He also went 14-for-16 at the free throw line. His 14 makes ranks seventh in NDC history, while his 16 attempts are eighth highest for a game in program history. Camara added season-highs in points (13) and boards (11).

Notre Dame's 15 made three-pointers are tied for ninth most in program history.

The Falcons will travel to No. 8 ranked West Liberty for a matchup on Nov. 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
