Volleyball drops final road contest to Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College volleyball team traveled to Wheeling University for their final road contest of the season. The Cardinals got the best of the Falcons 3-0 on Friday evening. Sophomore Kiley Kalina posted a game-high 20 digs as she answered the Wheeling attack all night long.
 
Wheeling began the contest hot with a quick 14-5 lead. Despite an 8-2 Falcon run, which was highlighted by a pair of Samantha Comer kill's, WU maintained a 16-13 lead. The Cardinals refused to give up the lead for the entire frame, winning 25-16.
 
Notre Dame battled back in the second set by forcing five ties as the scoreboard read 8-8. Senior Carli Derda continued to serve well with an ace. After the two sides went back and forth, Wheeling generated an 11-3 run, to grab a commanding 19-11 advantage. The Falcons tallied a short 5-1 run, but the Cardinals closed out the stanza 25-17.
 
In the final set, NDC opened with a 5-2 lead, following another pair of kills by Comer. WU responded with a game-changing 11-1 run to move in front 13-6. Notre Dame fought for the remainder of the frame, before falling, 25-17.
 
The Falcons were led on offense by Comer's team-high 14 kills, as sophomore Caris Cross dished out a team-high 24 assists on the night.
 
Defensively, the aforementioned Kalina logged a game-high 20 digs, followed by sophomore Grace Smotek with eight.
 
At the net, Comer and Derda blocked a game-high four Cardinal attacks apiece.
 
The Notre Dame College volleyball team will be back in action on Tuesday Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. when the Falcons welcome Frostburg State University into Murphy Gymnasium.
