BECKLEY, W.Va. – Two goals in the first half and one more in the second allowed Notre Dame College to get past Concord University by a score of 3-0, on Wednesday. Over the last three games, NDC has scored at least three goals, while the defense has not allowed the opponent to get on the scoreboard.
The Falcons took 10 shots in the first half and they went on the attack right away. Pushing the ball up near the box in the fifth minute, junior
Connor O'Reilly sent a pass to the right side of the field to
Rafael Kuwakino. Kuwakino, a freshman making his first start, sent a CU defender to the turf with a nice move and then rocketed the ball into the box to freshman
Simao Coelho, who stuck his leg out to redirect the ball into the goal.
Concord was held to just four shots, and two on target, in the game. The Mountain Lions' first shot on goal was sent in by Garrett Boucher in the 11th minute, but bounced into the hands of junior
Pedro Alves.
The next Notre Dame goal was scored by sophomore
Taylor Dyson in the 23rd minute. After a foul and free kick, the Falcons were working just past the midfield mark and O'Reilly sent the ball ahead to Dyson. The native of Manchester, England worked up the field, gathered and sent a shot from just outside the box. On a line, the ball found the net to give NDC a 2-0 advantage.
Notre Dame had chances throughout the rest of the first half, including an impressive shot by sophomore
Ailton Fagner Silva, who appeared in a game for the first time since Oct. 9.
Early in the second half, Concord had an opportunity and Louis Cole took it by sending a shot on goal, but Alves made the save.
The Falcons' goalkeeper now has eight shutouts on the year and NDC has 10, as a team.
With about 20 minutes remaining in the game, sophomore
Carlos Almeida sent a strong shot in from close range that bounced off of the Concord goalkeeper, Tommy Smith. As Smith lie on the ground, Dyson was in the right spot at the right time to score his second goal of the contest.
Dyson is now second in the conference in goals, with 11. However, he leads the MEC in assists (9) and points (31).
Over the last three contests, the Falcons have taken at least 20 shots and have not allowed an opponent to take more than nine. On Wednesday, NDC totaled 21 shots, while Concord sent in four.
With one more conference win, NDC will tie its 2019 record of 12 Mountain East Conference victories.
Notre Dame will close out the regular season, on Oct. 30, with a home matchup against Alderson Broaddus University. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
