SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – For the first time since 2018, Notre Dame College enters the Mountain East Conference Tournament with 14 wins. The No. 21 ranked Falcons put together another impressive win in the regular season finale, defeating Alderson Broaddus University, 5-0.
Prior to the contest, the program honored its seniors:
Ned Dry,
Jordan Lewis,
Jack Milford,
Kai Wagner and
Jack Groeneveld.
On the pitch, NDC took two shots on target within the first three minutes. AB's goalkeeper Diego Gomez stopped shots by Dry and
Simao Coelho.
The scoring began in the 22nd minute, when Dry was taking the ball toward down the middle of the field, before dropping it off to sophomore
Ailton Fagner Silva. Silva dribbled up the field about six yards and saw little resistance before sending a shot into the net.
Less than 10 minutes later, in the 31st minute, sophomore
Taylor Dyson lined up for a corner kick. The result was a direct pass to junior
Connor O'Reilly, who had an open look at goal and took it with a header to put NDC up 2-0.
In the first half, Notre Dame's defense did not allow Alderson Broaddus to take a shot. During their four-game win streak, the Falcons have not allowed an opponent to take more than nine shots in a game.
Sophomore
Carlos Almeida appeared to have the Falcons' next goal, early in the second half. Gomez went out to make a play on the ball in the box, but Almeida kept it away and then had an open shot. The Battlers' defense stepped up and was credited with a team save by clearing the ball away.
One minute later, the Falcons would sink that third goal when Milford, at midfield, popped a pass into the air to Silva. From just outside the box, Silva found space behind the AB defense and put it through for his second goal of the day.
After Alderson Broaddus had its first shot on goal of the game, the Falcons immediately went down the field on the hunt for another goal. On the run, Dyson sent the ball from the middle of the field to the right side of the box where Dry took control and tapped a slow roller past Gomez, who had already gone to the ground.
Almeida would finally get his goal in the 58th minute. Dry cut off an Alderson Broaddus pass and then waited for Almeida to get down the field before sending the ball his way. Almeida slowed it down, just outside the box, and took the chance for his second goal of the year.
The NDC coaching staff was able to get many players on the field during the contest, with 27 Falcons logging minutes.
Dyson had two assists in the game, bringing his season total to 11, which is tied for second most in a season in program history. Dry finished with a goal and two assists, his first multi-assist game of the year. Silva scored his first goals of 2022, after missing multiple games with injuries this season.
Over the final four games of the regular season, Notre Dame scored at least three goals, while not allowing a single goal to an opponent. The Falcons also took at least 20 shots in each of the last four contests.
NDC's 2022 team moves into third place in program history by reaching 11 shutouts in a season.
The Falcons are the three seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament, which begins on Nov. 1. For the first time in MEC history, the tournament will include six teams, giving the top two teams a bye in round one. The Falcons will host the six seeded West Liberty University, on Tuesday, at 3 p.m. for a quarterfinal matchup.
