Volleyball drops road contest to West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College volleyball team (10-16, 4-6 MEC) traveled to West Liberty University (16-9, 6-4 MEC) on Tuesday evening and fell 3-0. A balanced NDC offense was led by senior Kaye Dregalla with a team-high seven kills as sophomore libero Kiley Kalina paced the defense with a game-high 17 digs.
 
West Liberty got off to a hot start with a 7-2 lead. Notre Dame was able to respond and pull the game within one point (11-10) after Dregalla's kill. However, WLU reopened a five-point lead (17-12), and despite a late NDC run, WLU won the set, 25-19.
 
In the second set, West Liberty began on top with a 9-5 lead. The Hilltoppers then used a 10-1 run, to move ahead, 20-10 before winning the set 25-15.
 
WLU jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in set three before NDC responded to take the lead at 6-5. Dregalla logged another kill to give the Falcons the narrow advantage. Despite the Hilltoppers moving in front 12-9, the Falcons answered the call again by reclaiming a 15-14 lead. This time, freshman Ryleigh Ronald produced a kill for NDC. However, West Liberty would use a 10-2 run to eventually the close the frame out at 25-19.
 
As aforementioned, Dregalla tallied a team-high seven kills, followed by senior Blaire Barr with six and Ronald with five. Sophomore Jayme Zoeckler set up the Falcon attack with a team-high 15 assists.
 
On defense, Kalina's game-high 17 digs were accompanied by sophomore Grace Smotek with nine.
 
At the net, senior Carli Derda tied for the game-high with five blocks.
 
The Notre Dame College volleyball team will be back in action on Friday Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Glenville State University.
