ATHENS, W.Va. – On Wednesday night, Notre Dame College scored 42 points in the paint and had 29 points from contributors off the bench, but Concord University's hot shooting gave the Mountain Lions an early advantage and CU would hold on to win, 80-66.
To start the game, junior
Sam Jackson stepped out and knocked down his first three pointer of the season. The Falcons jumped on top 3-0 as junior
Jaedon Willis helped out and was credited with the assist.
Concord then started shooting the ball well and went on a 13-0 run, which included three 3-pointers. NDC began to dig itself out of an early deficit and after junior
Michael Sampson scored on back-to-back layups, the Falcons were down by just four points, 13-9, with 14:03 to go in the first half.
Sampson would finish the game with another double-double, tallying 13 points, on 60-percent shooting, and 11 rebounds.
The Mountain Lions increased their lead to as many as 12 points later in the stanza at 29-17.
Down by eight points with 3:29 remaining until halftime, Notre Dame started a run to get within one possession. Freshman
Obinna Ugwuakazi, who had just checked into the game, took a pass from freshman
John Godinez and put it in from close range. On NDC's next possession, junior
Tyland Crawford grabbed an offensive board after a missed shot and the ball would find Ugwuakazi for another layup. He was fouled on the shot attempt and sank his free throw.
With 1:31 on the clock, Willis dished out his third assist of the half and found Godinez for a three pointer, making the score 35-32 in favor of Concord. The Mountain Lions would quickly respond and Concord's Brandon Kennedy connected on a three to increase the halftime lead to six (38-32).
In the first 20 minutes of play, Willis and Godinez combined for seven assists.
Through the first six minutes of the second half, the game could have gone either way. Around the 18-minute mark, NDC started their 7-0 run. Freshman
DeAirius Barker drove to the basket and scored before Godinez knocked down a two-point jumper and then hit a triple. With 16:19 on the clock, Notre Dame trailed by one point, 42-41.
Godinez shot 45-percent (5-for-11) in the second half and scored 11 points. He would finish the game with 14 points.
About 30 seconds later, junior
Daylin Lee scored a couple more points in the paint and pulled NDC within one. But the Falcons were unable to break through and take the lead.
Later, NDC did put together a 6-0 run and trailed by just six points, 70-64, with 2:31 on the clock.
Notre Dame will come home to play Glenville State College on Jan. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
