SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Trailing for over 80 minutes on Wednesday afternoon, Notre Dame College fought back and scored two goals in two minutes to force overtime.
Lukas Hackaa gave the Falcons a 3-2 win with a goal in the 106th minute, finishing an incredible comeback over Alderson Broaddus University.
The Battlers first found the net 25-seconds into the match. Andreas Rossak took a pass and ran up the field. On the run, from about 27 yards away, he sent a line drive to the upper right corner of the goal to stun NDC and give AB a 1-0 lead.
"AB's first goal was an incredible strike and one of the best goals I've seen in college," said NDC head coach
Carl Nolan.
The Falcons had opportunities throughout the first 45 minutes, taking eight shots. With under 14 minutes to go before the halftime break, junior
Malvin Gblah took a shot off a free kick, just outside of the box on the right side. He barely missed wrapping the ball around the post, and it hit the side of the net.
With 33 minutes remaining in the second half, the Falcons broke away and had three players working down the field toward the AB goal. Sophomore
Filip Sparavec sent a pass from the left side of the box to the middle of the field, finding an open
Ned Dry. Dry tried to sneak a shot under the Battlers' goalkeeper Carlos Gallardo, but the Falcons were not able to get on the scoreboard.
Alderson Broaddus looked to put the game away in the 70th minute, as Angel De Avila found Tanner Kidwell for a goal to put AB up 2-0.
However, in the 81st minute, a free kick by Hackaa from 12 yards away, was headed in by sophomore
Antonio Bittencourt. In the 83rd minute, sophomore
Marcus Vinicius Pereira was working with the ball on the right side of the field before passing it into the box. Gblah then centered it with a pass to senior
Javier Mate, who tied the game at two.
In the 106th minute, NDC's defense stole the ball and went down the field. Sparavec moved the ball into the box, then passed to Hackaa who was just outside of the box. Hackaa had an open look at the goal and after a quick hesitation, sent in the game-winner.
"Today was a good test of our character," Nolan said. "Coming back from 2-0 down, with eight minutes to play was incredible. To complete the win in overtime is something this group hasn't done yet."
The Falcons out-shot Alderson Broaddus, 22-7 (11-4 on goal) throughout the game.
Notre Dame will try to build on this momentum as they travel to West Liberty on Saturday, Oct. 2, for a 3:30 p.m. start.
