SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The offense was on full display for Notre Dame College men's soccer on Wednesday. The Falcons scored twice in the first half and four times in the second half to defeat West Liberty University, 6-2.
The Falcons would take the first shot on goal of the game, when freshman
Ailton Fagner Silva's shot was saved by WLU goalkeeper Noah Underwood. But less than three minutes later, West Liberty put the first goal on the scoreboard when Liam Toman scored in the 13th minute.
Silva did find the back of the net in the 25th minute, following two solid passes up the field by sophomore
Lukas Hackaa and junior
Ned Dry. Six minutes after their first goal, NDC was set up for another goal when Underwood charged and slid to secure the ball in the box. However, he committed a foul in the process. Hackaa took the penalty kick and gave NDC a 2-0 advantage.
With less than a minute remaining before halftime, the Hilltoppers tied the game at 2.
To start the second half, the Falcons put junior
Jack Groeneveld in goal. The Hilltoppers were held to three shots in the second half, and none after the 58th minute.
Notre Dame wasted little time, scoring twice in the first 13 minutes of the second stanza. Following a corner kick, Dry converted on the Falcons' third goal of the game in the 49th minute with assists credited to senior
Alexandru Rumleanschi and junior
Malvin Gblah. NDC's
Taylor Dyson scored when a pass from Silva found him open on the right side of the box.
In the 68th minute, Hackaa worked around a defender and sent a shot into the air, that settled into the net and gave Notre Dame a 5-2 lead. NDC, once again, converted on a penalty kick when freshman
Carlos Almeida sent the ball past Underwood with less than three minutes remaining.
"It was great to get our first win of the season," said head coach
Carl Nolan. "We were disappointed with our first half showing as a group, but we put together a very good second half. We now focused on our next game."
Notre Dame took 17 shots as a team, including 11 in the second half. Silva, Hackaa and Dry combined for 13 of NDC's 17 shots, and six of the team's eight shots on goal. For Rumleanschi and Dry, today marked their first career assists. Silva recorded his first career goal and assist and Dyson also had his first goal. Hackaa finished with his first career multi-goal game.
Notre Dame will hit the road to battle Concord University on Sept. 19. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
