Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer falls to Charleston after a pair of second half UC goals

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – A top matchup in the Mountain East Conference on Sunday featured the two teams picked one and two in the MEC coaches' preseason poll. In Notre Dame College's season opener, the Falcons hosted No. 1 ranked University of Charleston. UC scored twice in the second half to win 2-0.

Between the 20-minute mark and the 30-minute mark in the first half, UC took five of their six first half shots. Two of their shots were on goal, but NDC goalkeeper Pedro Alvez kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes.

The Falcons did not get a good look at the goal to record a shot before halftime, but the two teams remained scoreless at the break.

NDC took their first shot of the contest, and the first for either team in the second half. The Falcons nearly broke through about four minutes into the second stanza when sophomore Lukas Hackaa stole the ball and sent a pass over the heads of Charleston defenders to freshman Carlos Almeida, who had snuck behind the defense. However, the UC defense closed in and the Golden Eagles' goalkeeper Marc Torrado went to the ground to stop the shot.

About ten minutes later, in the 59th minute, UC struck first when Ploutarchos Alonefti made the pass off the side of his foot to a cutting Eduardo Iranzo who shot the ball past a diving Alvez.

The Golden Eagles added a goal of insurance in the 67th minute when Adrian Camacho launched a corner kick into the box that was deflected by Lucas Christensen and scored by Emil Rasmussen.

NDC did outshoot UC in the final 45 minutes, 5-to-4.

"First of all, congratulations to the University of Charleston. This was a very difficult start to the season for our young men," said head coach Carl Nolan. "To play the national champions after the type of preseason we had was an immense challenge. I saw many positives today, and knowing the talent that we have returning to the team in a few weeks, excites me. We have asked the group to respond positively, and they did today. I'm proud of their response and reaction, and look forward to the next game."

Notre Dame stays home and will host West Liberty University on Sept. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
