Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer scores twice in second half to defeat Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. – On Friday night, Notre Dame College pushed their road win streak to three games as they defeated Wheeling University, 2-0. The Falcons took a season-high 28 shots in the game and allowed just seven Wheeling shots, which is tied for the lowest amount allowed by NDC this season.

Notre Dame was attacking throughout the first half and had their opportunities, taking seven shots on goal. In the 31st minute, freshman Marcus Vinicius Pereira worked the ball to the right side of the box. Wheeling goalkeeper Josh Zimmerman moved over toward the ball and Vinicius Pereira passed to freshman Carlos Almeida. Almeida's shot was saved by a Wheeling defender, perfectly placed in front of the goal.

In the 39th minute, Vinicius Pereira launched a shot that was on target from outside the box, causing Zimmerman to dive and make the save. Almeida found the ball and shot, but Zimmerman knocked it away. The ball rolled to freshman Leonardo Mansure, who took a shot from straight on, but was also saved by Zimmerman.

Notre Dame took 14 shots in the first half. Sophomore Ned Dry, Vinicius Pereira and Almeida all took three shots. Zimmerman recorded six saves.

In the 59th minute, the Falcons broke through. Almeida stole the ball and sent a pass up the field that led to a goal by Dry, his first of the season.

Notre Dame put an insurance goal on the board when Vinicius Pereira pushed the ball up the pitch to freshman Lukas Hackaa, who danced around a defender get to the middle of the field and put the ball into the net in the 81st minute.

The Falcons continued to be aggressive and had a few more chances. Vinicius Pereira's shot in the 86th minute hit the right post. Junior Daniel Tragansin also had a look when he stumbled against a defender, got up and took shot that Zimmerman pushed away.

"The second half was a great response to the challenge set before the game," said head coach Carl Nolan. "We didn't start the game at the tempo we really wanted, but we played with a lot more purpose after halftime. We fielded a young team again, and once more they added experience. I am pleased with the result, and now we prepare for the next challenge."

Freshman Pedro Alvez started in goal for the Falcons and recorded two saves.

Notre Dame plays their final road game of the regular season when they take on Alderson Broaddus University, on April 14. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
