NDC takes two from Alderson Broaddus, completes first road sweep of year

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Continuing on their road trip, Notre Dame College completed a sweep of Alderson Broaddus University, on Tuesday. Pitchers Taylor Olson and McKenzie Zigmont combined for a shutout in game one, winning by a score of 6-0. The Falcons' offense put six runs on the scoreboard, again, and won game two, 6-3.

The Falcons jumped on the board almost immediately in game one. Senior Katelyn Rheude singled to start the game, junior Daniele Rivera's sacrifice bunt moved her over to second and then junior Alexi Maciejowski slammed a two-run home run over the fence in left-center field. The big fly was Maciejowski's second of the season and second in the past two days.

Junior Lexi Rehm hit one of her four singles in the top of the fourth inning. She moved to second on an error and then senior McKenzie Zigmont hit an RBI single to right field.

Alderson Broaddus had bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the fourth inning. A ground ball back to the pitcher's circle was picked up by senior Taylor Olson, who threw home for an out, leading to a 1-2-3 double-play. A pop out then ended the inning.

The Battlers, again, had bases loaded and no outs in the sixth inning, but could not score a run on NDC.

The Falcons took advantage of a bases loaded situation in the seventh. Rehm singled up the middle to score one and then Zigmont brought in two with a single to left field.

Zigmont had two hits and three RBI in the batter's box. She entered the circle in the fifth inning and picked up her second save of the season after throwing three shutout innings. Rehm had a season-high four hits and Rheude finished with two hits. Olson picked up the win after striking out four hitters in four shutout innings.

Notre Dame posted multiple runs in the first inning of game two, as well. Rheude and Rivera singled and Maciejowski was hit by a pitch. Rehm plated two runs with her fifth single of the double-header. A groundout by sophomore Mya Wright scored the third run of the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the first two AB hitters were walked before Zigmont entered to pitch. Meadow Uncapher tied the contest with a three-run home run to left field.

NDC did not wait long to grab the lead and they did so in the fourth inning. With two outs, Rivera walked and scored when Maciejowski doubled to left field. And then in the fifth, Olson singled and Wright hit her first career homer, putting the Falcons ahead, 6-3.

Rheude and Olson each had two hits in the second game and Wright totaled three RBI. Zigmont earned the win after going five innings, allowing one run and striking out five.

"Great two wins today," said head coach Kelsey Stopp. "It's always nice to get more conference wins under our belt. Our offense today was clutch. I am extremely proud of Mya Wright for hitting her first collegiate homerun. We are looking forward to taking on Fairmont this Saturday."

Notre Dame will play Fairmont State University, on the road, in a double-header on April 10. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
