Zigmont shuts down Fairmont State offense to get the win in game two

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In a low scoring double-header, Notre Dame College fell to Fairmont State in game one by a score of 4-1, but in the second game, senior McKenzie Zigmont pitched a complete game shutout as Notre Dame took the 1-0 victory.

In the bottom of the first inning, Hannah Workman and Emily Riggs hit back-to-back doubles to put the first run on the board for Fairmont State. With two outs, a single scored Riggs to give FSU a 2-0 lead.

Notre Dame cut that lead in half in the top of the fourth. Junior Daniele Rivera and junior Alexi Maciejowski both singled before senior Taylor Olson knocked in a run with a two-out single.

The FSU Falcons responded in the bottom of the inning, and after walk and a single, Jessie Weaver scored two runs with a double.

Olson started the game in the circle, but Zigmont took over and pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

The only run of game two came in the top of the fourth inning for NDC. Rivera started the inning with a single and Maciejowski followed with a base hit. A fielder's choice then forced Rivera out at third base. Olson also hit into a fielder's choice, which scored Maciejowski, giving Notre Dame their first lead of the day.

That lead would stand as Zigmont allowed just two more hits to Fairmont State the rest of the game.

FSU did threaten in the first inning, when three base hits loaded the bags, but a strikeout ended the frame. They also had a runner on third base in the fifth, but could not get the run in.

Zigmont picked up the win, as she allowed just six hits and struck out two.

NDC comes home to play Frostburg State University, today, beginning at 1 p.m.
