Softball battles first place Frostburg State

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College took on the top team in the North Division on Sunday, as Frostburg State University came to South Euclid. FSU won the first contest of the day, 7-0, and earned the victory in game two by a score of 8-3.

In the first game, the Bobcats jumped on the board with a run in the second and the third inning. FSU had six extra base hits in the game, including three solo home runs, and scored six runs off of those hits.

The Falcons threatened a couple times. They had runners on first and third, with two out, in the bottom of the first inning and then in the sixth, three consecutive hits loaded the bases.

Junior Lexi Rehm led NDC with two hits in the game.

Frostburg State scored the first run in the second game. In the third inning, a single, steal and sacrifice bunt put a runner on third base and Ava Gnibus hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Ryann Darling and Kat Treff both hit RBI singles for FSU in the fourth, giving the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage.

Notre Dame scored their first run when freshman Ellen Wheatland reached on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning, which scored Rehm.

Senior Katelyn Rheude singled early in the fifth inning, and came around to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Rehm. The Falcons cut the lead to one run, 3-2.

Frostburg State would add two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take an 8-2 lead.

Rehm added an RBI when she singled up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to bring in junior Daniele Rivera.

Rheude, Rivera, Rehm and freshman McKenzie Anderson all recorded two hits in the second game. Rehm totaled four hits throughout the double-header.

The Falcons will host Fairmont State University on April 14. The first game of the double-header is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
