Clutch home runs and good pitching lead to sweep of Fairmont State

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Behind nine strikeouts by senior McKenzie Zigmont and a late three-run home run by sophomore Mya Wright, Notre Dame College defeated Fairmont State University, 4-3, in the first game of the double-header. Senior Taylor Olson allowed just one run and juniors Alexi Maciejowski and Lexi Rehm hit back-to-back homers to help NDC win 4-1 in game two.

Fairmont State scored first when Andie Baughman hit a two-run homer to center field in the first inning. Notre Dame scored one run in the bottom half of the inning when Rehm hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring junior Daniele Rivera.

In the third inning, FSU's leadoff hitter Haley McDaniel walked, stole second base and then scored on a single by Courtney Worcester.

With the score still 3-1 in favor of Fairmont State, NDC's offense came to life in the sixth. Rivera led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Olson was hit by a pitch and Wright knocked them both in with a go-ahead three-run home run over the fence in right center field.

"The count was 0-2, so the pitcher missed her spot and I just had to take advantage of it and do something for my team," Wright said.

After allowing the third run of the game to Fairmont State in the third inning, NDC pitcher McKenzie Zigmont struck out six hitters and allowed just two hits. She ended the game with a season-high nine strikeouts, including three in the fifth inning, and picked up the win.

In the second game of the day, Fairmont State was threatening in the second inning and had runners on first and second base. McDaniel singled to left field, but Hannah Tolle rounded third too far and was thrown out by a throw from Wright in left field.

NDC took advantage of more mistakes in the bottom of the second. Rehm walked to lead off the inning, stole second and moved to third base on wild pitch. Zigmont hit a line drive that was dropped in center field, which allowed the first run to score.

FSU, again, had two runners on base in the third inning, but could not score a run. In the bottom of that inning, Fairmont State pitcher Cierra Chastain got the first two batters out, before Maciejowski hit a homer to left field. Immediately after a pitching change, Rehm homered to center and put Notre Dame up, 4-0.

The only Fairmont State run came in the top of the 6th inning when the ball went over the center field fence after Maciejowski caught the ball but collided with the wall.

Olson earned the win after allowing just one run in seven innings of work. She is now tied for first in program history with 59 complete games in her career.

Maciejowski had two hits in the game, including the home run.

"Great wins today," said head coach Kelsey Stopp. "Pitching was on and they stayed focused each game. Our offense was extremely clutch today, especially Mya Wright with a three-run home run in the first game to put us up for a win. Alexi [Maciejowski] and Lexi [Rehm] had great home run swings, as well, in the second game. Overall, a great day for us and I love how this team keeps showing up to fight."

Fairmont State came into the day two games ahead of NDC in the Mountain East Conference North Division standings, but the two teams now have identical conference records.

Next up for the Notre Dame will be a trip to Frostburg State University, on April 16. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
