ELKINS, W.Va. – To start the week, Notre Dame College and Davis & Elkins College played two very close games. In the first matchup, NDC won 4-3 after junior
Alexi Maciejowski hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning. The Senators scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two and won 6-5.
The Falcons grabbed a lead in the third inning of game one. A walk, an error and a single loaded the bases for senior
McKenzie Zigmont who singled and brought in two runs.
In the top of the fourth inning, NDC was threatening again after a walk, a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bags. Maciejowski reached on a fielder's choice as D&E went home for the out, but an NDC run scored on that play after a fielding error by first baseman Maddie Lavelle. The Falcons led 3-0.
Davis & Elkins tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three runs with a walk, a single and a fielder's choice.
In the top of the seventh, with one out, Maciejowski came through with a clutch solo home run to give NDC a 4-3 advantage. The home run was Maciejowski's first of the season and second of her career. She ended game one with two hits and two runs scored.
Zigmont picked up the win after entering the circle and going 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.
In the bottom of the first inning of game two, D&E strung together three consecutive hits and a double by Honesty Holt plated two. They would add one more run with a single, later in the inning.
An RBI double by Kailynn Parks, in the second inning, added a fourth run for Davis & Elkins.
Notre Dame had just two hits entering the fifth inning. However, sophomores
Mya Wright and
Sydnie Jarrett each singled to start the fifth. Everyone was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases and then junior
Daniele Rivera walked to score a run. Maciejowski put a second run on the board when she singled to right field and then the game was tied at four when Zigmont scored two with a single.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Falcons took the lead when senior
Katelyn Rheude doubled in Jarrett. But, the Senators responded in the bottom of the inning. The tying run scored on an error and then with runners on first and third, Parks hit a walk-off RBI single.
Zigmont ended the day with three hits and four RBI in the batter's box, overall. She also pitched seven innings in the second contest. Both Wright and Jarrett had two hits in the second game.
Notre Dame plays again tomorrow, going up against Alderson Broaddus University with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
