Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer wins home opener with strong defense, impressive offense

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – In Notre Dame College's home opener, the Falcons scored a season-high three goals and recorded their third consecutive shutout with a 3-0 victory over Frostburg State University, on Sunday.

A consistent rain was falling as the game began, but both teams took several shots early. Within the first ten minutes, NDC's freshman Filip Sparevec took two shots that were saved by Frostburg's goalkeeper Joel Assad.

Early in the 26th minute, Notre Dame took a couple corner kicks that nearly led to the first goal of the contest, including a shot by freshman Leonardo Mansure, which was saved. Nearly two minutes later, the Falcons struck first when sophomore Malvin Gblah was at the top of the box and found senior Evans Armah with a pass that was on target. Armah finished with a shot that settled into the right side of the net in the 27th minute.

NDC went into the halftime break leading, 1-0. The Falcons took six shots and Frostburg took four.

To start the second half, Notre Dame took five shots before converting their second goal of the game. A corner kick by freshman Marcus Vinicius Pereira found its way into the box. Freshman Antonio Bittencourt headed the ball toward junior Nicholas Felician, who headed the ball past Assad and into the goal in the 75th minute.

Notre Dame then put the third goal on the board, about ten minutes later. The ball bounced in front of the goal, was kicked up in the air once by sophomore Ned Dry and bounced once more as freshman Carlos Almeida waited for it to come down. Almeida took a shot, and scored, using a bicycle kick, kicking the ball backwards as he fell to the turf on his back.

"We are really pleased with how we played for most of the game," said head coach Carl Nolan. "We have things to work on, but the players have listened midweek and they have shown that they are coachable and hungry for success. Our third goal today was an outstanding piece of skill from a player who has just come back from injury."

The Falcons took 11 shots in the second half and Frostburg State was held to just three. Of Notre Dame's 17 shots in the game, 10 were on goal. NDC's freshman goalkeeper Arvid Engstrom saved two shots.

Today's goals were the first of the season for Armah, Felician and Almeida. And the assists credited to Gblah, Bittencourt and Vinicius Pereira were the first of the season for those players, as well.

Notre Dame will play at home and battle No. 1 University of Charleston on April 1. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
