PHILIPPI, W.Va. – A quick start for Notre Dame College, and junior
Jordan Roland, put the Falcons in front, but a late first half run pushed Alderson Broaddus University past the Falcons, as NDC fell 77-65, on Wednesday.
After the Falcons fell behind in the opening minutes, Roland scored eight quick points to put NDC in front. Beginning at the 16:51-mark, the Falcons' guard knocked down threes on back-to-back possessions and then scored on a layup. Notre Dame led 10-6, five minutes into the game.
A three-pointer by ABU's Coryon Rice cut the NDC lead down to one point, but the Falcons went on a 7-0 run. Freshman
Colby Dillenbeck hit two free throws, Roland connected on a layup and sophomore
Jordan Burton knocked down a three to increase the lead to eight points, 20-12, with 10:44 on the clock.
The Falcons led for much first half, until Alderson Broaddus put together a 16-4 run. The Battlers stole the ball three times during that run and Notre Dame called a timeout with 4:28 to go in the first half, as ABU led, 28-24.
Notre Dame came right back and tied the game at 29, after junior
Michael Sampson hit a free throw to finish a three-point play. Alderson Broaddus led by four points, 35-31, at halftime. Roland led all scorers with 10 points in the first half. NDC shot the ball at 44-percent and went 4-for-6 from long range.
The two teams traded a bucket to start the second half, before Burton was fouled and went to the free throw line for three shots. He made all three and pulled NDC within one point, 37-36, but that would be as close as Notre Dame would get. Alderson Broaddus expanded their lead to double-digits.
"We weren't the tougher team tonight," said head coach
Mark Richmond. "We missed numerous shots around the rim. [Alderson Broaddus] did not help a lot on drives, so we had driving lanes all night, we just did not convert. We had two assists and 17 turnovers. That's not a winning formula."
Roland led the team with 15 points, Sampson totaled nine points, shooting 4-for-4 from the field, and 10 rebounds. Junior
Tyland Crawford had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench. The Falcons shot 43-percent from the field in the second half, but knocked down just one three-pointer. For the game, NDC's field goal percentage was 44-percent.
The Falcons come home to take on No. 23 West Liberty University on Feb. 13. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
