FROSTBURG, Md. – A late rally came up short as Notre Dame College pushed Frostburg State University to five sets, but the Bobcats came out in front. The Falcons were highlighted by senior
Amelia Kaeberlein's historic performance, as she set a new program record and tied the Mountain East Conference record by totaling 44 digs.
The first set was incredibly close, with neither team jumping ahead by more than three points. The set was tied 12 times. NDC held a lead of 18-15, but FSU put three consecutive points on the board to tie. The Falcons took the set victory after they scored back-to-back points with the help of an attack error and then a kill by
Blaire Barr.
Early in the second set, the two teams were battling again before the Bobcats went on a 6-1 run and grabbed a 10-5 lead. They never looked back and won by a score of 25-17.
Another run at the beginning of the third set put Frostburg State in front by a comfortable margin, as they scored seven consecutive points to pull ahead 10-4. The Falcons did fight back and scored five straight points to tie the set at 14. Sophomore
Brittany Miller had three kills during that run and finished the match with a career-high 15. NDC would tie the set at 17, but the home team closed out the set with a 25-21 win.
The rollercoaster ride continued into the fourth set as the teams knotted the score up eight times before either team reached 11 points. However, after the score was tied at 10, NDC scored nine of the next 12 points to take a commanding 19-13 lead. Junior
Kaye Dregalla had the kill that sealed the match and NDC won 25-20.
FSU quickly put some distance between itself and Notre Dame in the fifth set and won by a score of 15-8.
Kaeberlein has now totaled at least 40 digs in a match, twice this season. On Tuesday, she broke her own program record, which she set on Sept. 4, and ties the MEC record for most digs in a match, which was set on Oct. 4, 2019. She has 565 on the season.
Jayme Zoeckler (26) and
McKenzie Andrix (16) combined for 42 assists. Zoeckler had a double-double after recording 15 digs.
Kiley Kalina totaled 12 digs.
The Falcons finish the regular season at Alderson Broaddus University, on Nov. 12. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
