Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s soccer extends shutout streak to four games

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – After the Notre Dame College men's soccer program celebrated their seniors before the game, the Falcons finished off the season sweep over Concord University. NDC scored once in the first half and twice in the second half for a 3-0 victory over the Mountain Lions.

The Falcons were on the attack early and often, taking three shots within the first three minutes. NDC shot the ball 18 times in the first half with an additional 22 shots in the second stanza. They totaled 40 shots, which is a new NCAA Division II era program record for NDC. The previous high was 37, which was done on Sept. 27, 2014.

Concord did take possession and nearly put the first goal on the scoreboard. Off of a free kick into the box, a foul was called on NDC and a penalty kick was issued. Concord's Todd Penn ran up to the ball and sent it, but Notre Dame's goalkeeper Pedro Alves dove to his left and knocked the ball away with one hand.

From the 13:56-mark until the 30:52-mark on the clock, Notre Dame took nine shots. The Falcons were able to break through with the game's first goal in the 34th minute. Senior Kane Bartholomew set up for a free kick about 26 yards away from the goal. He sent the ball on a line toward the upper right corner, and the perfectly placed shot found the net.

The first time these two teams met this season, NDC scored four times in the first half. The Concord defense allowed just four shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, on Wednesday. That changed in the second half, as NDC took 11 shots on target and scored twice.

The first goal of the second half happened in the first six minutes. Concord's Ezequiel Villarrel was called for a foul in the box. Hackaa was called upon to take the penalty kick, and converted in the 51st minute to put Notre Dame up, 2-0.

Hackaa and Bartholomew have now scored a goal in back-to-back games.

Concord's goalkeeper Kyle Brown had his work cut out for him and he played well, making eight saves in the final 45 minutes.

The Falcons added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, as sophomore Filip Sparavec netted his fifth goal in the last four games. Bartholomew received a pass and worked it near the endline on the left side. He crossed the ball and Sparavec found an opening, leaped and headed the ball off the keeper and into the net.

"Today was a good day for the program," said head coach Carl Nolan. "The win was very pleasing, but the opportunity to celebrate our eight senior players was a great experience. All eight players have added something unique and special to the program and will always be Notre Dame College soccer Falcons. We thank them all!"

NDC's 15 shots on goal in the game is their third highest mark in a contest this season.

For the fourth consecutive match, Notre Dame's defense has held an opponent scoreless. That's the longest streak since they had five consecutive shutouts from Aug. 30 to Sept. 12, 2018. Concord only took three shots all game.

Notre Dame currently sits in third place in the Mountain East Conference standings, as the top four teams qualify for the conference tournament. The Falcons finish the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 7, when they travel to Alderson Broaddus University, for a 5:30 p.m. start.
