Women's basketball suffers overtime loss to Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – The Notre Dame College women's basketball team (3-2, 2-0 MEC) traveled to Slippery Rock University (4-1, 1-0 PSAC) on Saturday afternoon seeking to extend their win streak to four games. During the contest, Notre Dame did not trail from the 7:20 mark in the first quarter until there was 4:32 left in overtime. The Rock strung together a comeback that was capped off with a 77-71 win during the extra period.
 
In the first quarter, NDC went on a 15-2 run to go up 15-6 at the midway point in the period. Notre Dame led 18-12 after ten minutes of play.
 
In the second quarter, the Rock would pull the game to 23-22 NDC at the 2:28 mark, but the Falcons would rattle off a quick 10-2 run to go back up by nine, 33-24 at the half.
 
The third quarter would begin with an Emma Martcheva layup and an 11-point NDC lead, their largest of the game. SRU would bring the game back within striking distance at the 6:30 mark, 35-32 Notre Dame. NDC would enter the final quarter up 47-43 after Slippery Rock won the third by five points.
 
In the fourth quarter, SRU would tie the game for the first time since the first quarter at 47-47 with 8:56. The teams would battle back and forth in the final stanza as they tied two more times throughout the quarter. The Rock scored the final points of regulation on a layup with 51 seconds remaining to tied the game at 61-61.
 
In overtime, Notre Dame faced their first deficit since the first quarter when Slippery Rock went on top 63-62. The Rock would play inspired basketball during the overtime period as they grew their lead to six points with just 1:15 remaining. A few late buckets by NDC were neutralized by SRU free throws as the Rock won 77-71.
 
Alana Ellis led Notre Dame on offense with 17 points, as Jen Oduho (16), Amil Ali-Shakir (15) and Jada Marone (14) added double figures for the Falcons. Ali-Shakir was on fire from beyond the arc by shooting 5 of 6 from deep (83.3%).
 
Marone and Martcheva led NDC on the rebounding end with seven boards each as the Falcons were without leading rebounder Tamia Ridley.
 
Ali-Shakir and Marina Adachi played with active hands by recording five and four steals respectively. However, it was the Falcons who were riddled with turnovers during the contest as SRU forced 28 turnovers out of NDC, while Notre Dame generated 18 turnovers out of the Rock.
 
Notre Dame College will be back in action on Wednesday Dec. 1 when the Falcons travel to Glenville State College with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
