Volleyball stifled by a tough Fairmont State team

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College volleyball team drove down to Fairmont State on Tuesday evening for the Falcon Bowl. Fairmont State won the two team's first meeting back on Oct. 1, in South Euclid, 3-0. FSU came out on top again today, 3-0.

The story of the match was Notre Dame starting off each set slow. In the first set, NDC got down by a few points early, which FSU took advantage of and quickly made the score 19-11. Fairmont State held off a late Notre Dame run to win the first set 25-19. In the second set, NDC again started out flat and faced a 14-5 deficit. The Falcons would claw back into the 20-15, but FSU would finish the job, 25-19. The third set was much of the same as Fairmont State led 14-4 at the blink of an eye. The Fighting Falcons polished off the contest 25-13.

On offense, Kaye Dregalla led the team with 11 kills, followed by nine other NDC Falcons who recorded 33 kills as a team. Jayme Zoeckler posted a team-high 18 assists along with McKenzie Andrix's ten, to total 29 as a team. Ellie Schenk (2), Grace Smotek (1) and Zoeckler (1) tallied the only service aces on the evening for Notre Dame.

On defense, reigning MEC Defensive Player of the Week Amelia Kaeberlein paced the match with 16 digs. Nine other Falcons aided the libero to 47 digs as a team. At the net, Katie Richardson, Carli Derda, Blaire Barr and Smotek all generated one block each to total two blocks as a squad.

Notre Dame College will be back in action on Friday Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. for the team's final home contest of 2021 when they welcome Wheeling University to Murphy Gymnasium.
