INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College women's soccer team (3-6-3, 3-5-3 MEC) traveled to West Virginia State (9-3-1, 8-2-1 MEC) on Wednesday evening for an MEC inter-divisional matchup. In a high scoring affair, WVSU would prevail by a score of 4-2.
In the first half, West Virginia State would open the scoring in the 4
th minute with Fran Soares-Cupertino's tenth goal of the season. In addition, with under a minute to play in the first half, WVSU added another goal, this time from Brooklyn Pritt. NDC would struggle in the first half, by totaling three shots with none on target. In the second stanza,
Louisa Follert ended the Falcon scoring drought by scoring her sixth goal of the season on a shot from the top of the box that cut the Yellow Jacket lead in half, 2-1. A sudden momentum shift for NDC was put to rest when WVSU answered with a pair of goals, both within five minutes of Blaising to make it a 4-1 Yellow Jacket lead in the 61
st minute.
Sammy Salatino would round out the scoring for both sides when she connected with a missile of a shot from 40 yards out to make the score 4-2 in the 78
th minute. Salatino is now second on the team in goals scored with five.
In total, NDC generated ten shots with five of the shots on goal from Follert (2), Salatino (1),
Kalie Blaising (1) and
Hannah Smith (1). Moreover, the Falcons had two corner kicks and also two saves from
Jordan Pasalaqua in goal. In comparison, WVSU posted 16 shots with six shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets also saw six corner kick opportunities, grabbed three saves via keeper Laura Galindo, while Pritt was shown the only yellow card caution of the match.
Notre Dame College will return to Mueller Field on Sunday Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. when they host Frostburg State University as a part of a men's and women's soccer double-header.
